April 1 - Tomas Alfredson


Happy 55th Birthday, Tomas Alfredson! Born today in 1965 as Hans Christian Tomas Alfredson, this Swedish actor and film director is best known internationally for directing the 2008 Swedish romantic horror vampire drama film 'Låt den rätte momma in' ('Let the Right One In'). 
  
Based off of Swedish writer of horror novels and short stories John Ajvide Lindqvist's eponymous 2004 Gothic speculative horror fiction novel, the film follows Oskar (Kåre Hedebrant), a sensitive, bullied twelve-year-old boy who lives with his mother in suburban Sweden. 
  
Later on, Oskar meets his new neighbor, the mysterious and moody Eli (Lina Leandersson). They eventually strike up a friendship.  
  
Initially reserved with each other, Oskar and Eli slowly form a close bond, but it soon becomes apparent that she is no ordinary young girl. Eventually, Eli shares her dark, macabre secret with Oskar, revealing her connection to a string of bloody local murders. 
  
Alfredson is also best known for directing the French/British/German 2011 Cold War spy thriller/mystery espionage drama film 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy'. 
  
Based off of British author of espionage novels David John Moore Cornwell's (better known by the pen name John le Carréeponymous 1974 thriller spy fiction novel, the film is set in 1970s England.  
  
The head of MI6, Control (John Hurt), dispatches agent Jim Prideaux (Mark Strong) to meet with a Hungarian general who knows the identity of a Soviet spy in the organization's ranks.  
  
However, the mission goes wrong, and the general dies before he can reveal the information. Undersecretary Oliver Lacon (Simon McBurney) calls veteran agent George Smiley (Gary Oldman) back from forced retirement to ferret out the mole and stop the flow of vital British secrets to the Russians. 
  
John Le Carré also has a bit part in the film, credited as Christmas Party Guest. 
  
Alfredson has won the Guldbagge award for Best Direction twice. He received these accolades iin 2005 for the three-hour 2004 Swedish drama/comedy film 'Fyra nyanser av brunt' ('Four Shades of Brown') and in 2008 for 'Let the Right One In'. 
  
Alfredson is the son of Swedish actor, film director, writer and comedian Hans Alfredson and the younger brother of Swedish film director Hans Daniel Björn Alfredson. 
  
Alfredson has been active from 1971–present.
