July 10 - National Kitten Day

Happy National Kitten Day! July 10 purr-fectly celebrates the cuddly warmth of a kitty. The miniature furballs of energy snuggle their way into our hearts with no effort all. Within a flick of their tiny ears, we’re in love.

The day aims to remind us that while kittens are well equipped to find their way into our hearts, many don’t find homes. They’re abandoned at shelters, on the side of the road or wild and feral.

Neutering or spaying our pets, including our cats, is vital to their health and keeping the stray population down.

Another goal of awareness campaigns like this one is to encourage adoptions. Instead of purchasing a kitten from a pet store, adopt from a shelter. Many kittens are born in shelters. While their ages may vary, all kittens do become cats.

Follow the shelter’s guidelines. Keep these tips in mind when adopting:

  1. 1. There’s an application process. Read through it and understand it. The guidelines are for the safety of the animals, the employees, and you.

  1. 2. Ask questions. It’s important there’s an understanding between you and the shelter. Most shelters have volunteers and paid employees. However, they work on a very tight budget. Please don’t expect any special accommodations.

  1. 3. A good shelter will place the interests of the animal first. They want the cat to have a successful placement. Some animals have anxiety while others get along with anyone and every type of animal.

  1. 4. Consider the size of your home and where you live – an apartment or house.

  1. 5. Who lives with you? That includes people and pets – does everyone get along and does anyone have allergies?

  1. 6. How much time do you have for a pet?

  1. 7. So you’ve spotted the kitten for you. Be sure to make several visits to the shelter. Play with the kitten. Spend time grooming them. See how the kitten reacts to other cats. Learn the kitten’s behavior.

Maybe your kitten has health issues or doesn’t get along with children. Perhaps another kitten gets along better with dogs. All these factors will be considered on your application.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Play with your kitten or bring him/her a new toy. Share a selfie with your kitten. Visit a shelter and volunteer your time.

If you are considering getting a kitten, adopt instead of purchasing one. Use #NationalKittenDay to share your story.

July 10 - National Collector Car Appreciation Day

Happy National Collector Car Appreciation Day! Each year in July. we celebrate the day of which recognizes the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society.

Since 1893, Americans have always had a fascination with automobiles since the first United State's horseless carriage was demonstrated by the Duryea Motor Wagon Company.

It was this bygone romance of the motor took us from rough country roads to iconic highways and byways.

We were also able to stretch our legs and cross the country more independently than ever before. The urge to go faster, fleeter and finer were inspirations for design and ingenuity. Additionally, assembly lines made cars more affordable.

The appeal of the automobile influenced the American sense of adventure. Nostalgia, perseverance, and exploration are the topics of the day.

Surprisingly, the automobile and the horse shared the road for a time causing much confusion.

Stop signs and signal lights were non-existent. Rules of the road were not yet established. Still, motor companies began to tailor their designs to a public demanding a particular style.

Today, the collectors of these eras of yesteryear keep history and memories alive. They restore and maintain old metal, engines, and blinkers.

Crank, push-button, or throttle starters once rusting in a barn rev to life. Specialists take great care to find the right part or color, and skilled artists put their hard labor to work restoring a single collector car.

They spend hours on end painting, repairing, rebuilding, and welding to recreate the final result of a pristine collector car.

The day recognizes those individuals dedicated to preserving a piece of American history. We associate each era with a certain car.

Whether we ride in a Prohibition-era Cadillac Sedan, a 1950s era muscle car, or in our grandfather’s pickup truck, they take us back.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Give a shout out to a dedicated restorer you know. Recognize their talent and knowledge. Attend a collector car event or show. Share your tips and videos.

While you’re celebrating, take a ride in your classic car. Post photos of your collector car on social media using #CollectorCarAppreciationDay.
