March 9 - National Crab Meat Day

Happy National Crab Meat Day! Observed annually on March 9th, National Crab Meat Day (also National Crabmeat Day) offers a day to celebrate one of America’s favorite crustaceans.

With 1.5 million tons of crab consumed every year around the world, plenty of crab meat lovers celebrate every year!

While crab meat is a healthy choice, once you add the butter, the fat and calories add up.  And there are thousands of species of crabs, but only certain ones are edible.

In the United States, some of the more popular and tasty ones are the blue crab, stone crab, Dungeness, king, and rock or snow crabs. They come in both hard and soft shells and can be found along all the coasts and Hawaii.

Enjoying the meat of these crustaceans can be done in many ways. Boiled crab, either the legs or the whole creature, results in a feast requiring some labor from the diner. However, every tasty morsel is well worth the effort. Mix the meat with other ingredients to create dips, cakes, or soups.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Boil or steam some crab. There are a variety of ways crab can be used. Or, give one of these recipes a try:

March 9 - National Meatball Day

Happy National Meatball Day! On March 9th, we recognize one of the great American food holidays.

It is not clear how this day got started, but who can resist the idea of celebrating National Meatball Day? There are many different ways to celebrate meatballs:

  • • Lamb Meatballs
  • • Meatball Pizza
  • • Meatball Sub
  • • Porcupine Meatballs (made with rice)
  • • Spaghetti and meatballs
  • • Swedish Meatballs
  • • Turkey Meatballs
  • • and the list goes on and on.
There is a restaurant in New York that has fifty-four different kinds of meatballs!

Not only do meatballs allow for variety, but they move from appetizer to side dish to the main dish quite easily. Meatballs can be made the night before and put in the crockpot, or days before and kept in the freezer.

HOW TO OBSERVE

To celebrate, some restaurants give a free side order of meatballs, while others are donating money to homeless shelters. Cook yourself up your favorite meatballs or go out and order some from a restaurant near you!

You can even try this tangy Apple Butter Meatball Sub recipe by visiting the website below. Share your favorite recipes with friends and family. They’re sure to ask for seconds!

March 9 - National Barbie® Day

Happy National Barbie® Day! On March 9th, today celebrates an iconic toy that premiered on this day in 1959. Barbie debuted at the American International Toy Fair in New York City, New York.

March 9th, 1959 also celebrates the official birthday of Barbie®.

Barbie’s full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts, and American businesswoman and inventor Ruth Handler created the fashion doll.

The doll had been named after Ruth's and her husband Elliott's daughter. Both of her parents were co-founders of the American multinational toy manufacturing and entertainment company Mattel®.

While toymakers mass-produced toys for years, before Barbie®, none of them had adult features.

Barbie’s adult features made the toy a first of its kind. Interestingly, the marketing strategy for Barbie® extensively relied on television advertising.

For example, Barbie® was the sole sponsor of the Mickey Mouse Club, marketing directly to children.

It was a unique approach for the time. Estimates place over one billion Barbie® dolls have been sold worldwide in over one hundred and fifty countries!

However, many detractors often criticize Barbie® for being an unattainable ideal of a woman. While her figure alone is unrealistic, over the years, Barbie® evolved both in style and shape.

In 1961, Mattel® introduced Ken Carson as the boyfriend of Barbie®.

In 1998, the Toy Hall of Fame inducted Barbie® into its hallowed halls. The toy joined hundreds of other famous toys, some of which National Day Calendar® celebrates throughout the year. Some of those include the Duncan® yoyochess, and Radio Flyer® wagon

In 2019, the Barbie® brand honored pioneering women across several eras, as well. The modern Barbie® offers positive role models in business, science, education, and more. And Barbie® keeps changing with the times as well.

FUN FACT:

German super-fan Bettina Dorfmann has an extensive record-breaking collection of over 15,000 different Barbie® dolls!

Dorfmann received her first doll back in 1966 when she was five years old. However, it wasn’t Barbie®, it was Midge, the best friend of Barbie®Dorfmann has only been collecting seriously since 1993.
