September 14 - National Sober Day

Happy National Sober Day! On September 14, today encourages any and all of us to celebrate sober life and bring awareness to addiction.

The entire day focuses on showing support for anyone living in sobriety.

Not only that, but the observance sets a standard for the whole world that being sober is okay. Show your friends and family on the road to recovery by spending the day sober as well.

Ideally scheduled during National Recovery Month, the day supports removing the stigma associated with addiction. It opens the lines of communication that lead to better understanding.

The day provides an opportunity to build educated support networks. It also strengthens existing ones. When systems are paved with an aware, loving, and honest cheering section, success is more likely.

If we stumble, aren’t we more likely to get back up again when we have a solid support system?

Encouragement of one day fuels more support and awareness, leading to long-term sobriety. That’s something worth celebrating! The opposite of addiction is a connection.

Today will provide a model for future generations as well. By demonstrating how to enjoy life alcohol-free, the day will embolden future generations to say no to alcohol.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Spend the day sober. While that may seem simple enough, it may come as a challenge to some.

Start by finding recipes for delicious mocktails. Be sure to plan activities that don’t feel like they require alcohol to have fun.

Enjoy the day! By all means, do things you and your friends enjoy doing. Just remove alcohol from the equation.

Call, text, email a friend or family member in recovery.  Let them know you support their sobriety. Share with them how you are going to spend this day alcohol-free.

Use #NationalSoberDay to share your experiences on social media.

HISTORY

In 2019, Real Aligned Women founded National Sober Day to encourage us to celebrate Sober life and bring awareness to addiction. You are never alone in your sobriety.

Also, in 2019, the Registrar at National Day Calendar® proclaimed National Sober Day to be observed annually on September 14.

How can you observe or celebrate someone you know of whom has practiced sobriety?

September 14 - National Virginia Day

Happy National Virginia Day! Today we observe the 10th state to join the union back on June 25, 1788.

This southeastern U.S. state stretches from the Chesapeake Bay to the Appalachian Mountains, with a long Atlantic coastline.

Virginia is one of the thirteen original colonies, and the tenth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution.

With historic landmarks including Monticello, founding father Thomas Jefferson’s iconic Charlottesville plantation.

The Jamestown Settlement and Colonial Williamsburg are living-history museums reenacting Colonial and Revolutionary-era life.

Mountains in the west stretch south and east toward swamps and islands. The population is as varied as the scenery as well.

From the picturesque small towns of the Mother of Presidents (or the Mother of States) to bustling cities and cavernous valleys, Virginia's complex depth of history and topography creates unique and breathtaking experiences.

Virginia’s proximity to Washington D.C. makes it ideal for government commuters and tourism to the U.S. Capital.

Many of our nation’s headquarters can be found in Virginia including the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), National Fish and Wild Life Service, and the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).

Many of these agencies can be found in the world’s largest office building: the Pentagon! In fact, more Virginians work for the U.S. government than any other state.

On National Virginia Day, we explore the people, the places, and the flavors that have developed long before European settlers arrived.

John Tyler - 10th U.S. President

Zachary Taylor - 12th U.S. President

As the earliest established colony, Virginia’s roots run deep in the political process. More Virginians have been elected president than from any other state, including the first for a total of eight in all.

Since 1917, a Virginian hasn’t been elected to the highest office of the United States.

Virginia Day Flavor

The farm rich land of Virginia supplies a menu full of orchard delights, delicacies from the sea and classic barbecue.

Virginia’s Rappahannock River and the Chesapeake Bay makes for excellent access to fresh Rappahannock oysters and crab. Add excellent opportunities for trout fishing, anglers and seafood lovers rejoice!

When in the South, BBQ is a purification ritual. Fried chicken with black-eyed peas is on the menu, too.

We all know that President George Washington was born here, so it should be no surprise that cherry pie they must have dessert – even if he didn’t chop down that cherry tree.

Make sure to enjoy some homemade apple butter. It’s an excellent spread on English muffins for breakfast or added to waffles. Substitute the jelly on your PB&J at lunch; it’s divine. Makes a great snack, too!
