April 12 - National Licorice Day

Happy National Licorice Day! On April 12th each year, today celebrates black licorice in all its forms.

It also recognizes its history, health benefits, and distinction around the world. You won’t be limited when it comes to licorice, either.

There’s plenty of licorice candies, licorice ropes, jelly beans, jewels, and many others to enjoy! Of course, the designation has evolved as people savor all types and flavors of licorice to celebrate the day.

If you’re a fan of licorice and have noticed it makes your tummy feel better, there’s a reason. Licorice root can soothe a stomach bothered by heartburn or gastritis.

The glycyrrhizic acid in licorice contains immune-boosting and anti-inflammatory properties that can help to restore balance to the stomach lining.

That’s definitely something worth celebrating! Grab a few black jelly beans from the candy jar for this holiday!

HOW TO OBSERVE

Take a world tour taste test of licorice. The variety seems endless! Some combinations included salted licorice or chocolate-covered licorice.

Or try licorice-flavored cookies or ice cream to celebrate the day. Make sure to enjoy some licorice and share your favorite, too! Use #NationalLicoriceDay to post on social media.

HISTORY

In 2004, Licorice International, in coordination with the National Confectioners Association, designated April 12th as National Licorice Day. The company offers nearly one hundred types of licorice from all over the world!

What is your favorite licorice?

April 12 - National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day

Happy National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day! On April 12 each year, today recognizes one of the top comfort foods in the United States. Why wouldn’t it be when we’re talking about bread grilled to perfection, and warm, gooey, melted cheese?

According to food historians, many cultures around the world have enjoyed cooked bread and cheese since ancient times. The United States modern version of the grilled cheese sandwich originated in the 1920s.

As sliced bread and American cheese became easily available, Americans began making open-faced grilled cheese sandwiches.

United States government cookbooks describe Navy cooks broiling “American cheese filling sandwiches” during World War II.

Grilled cheese sandwiches are versatile thanks to the ability to mix and match cheeses, bread, and seasonings. Adding sautéed vegetables or herb-infused oils can elevate this simple comfort food to a whole other level.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Make your favorite version of a grilled cheese sandwich. Do you use American cheese or do you prefer Swiss? What’s your favorite cheese? Serve it with your favorite soup and sides as well.

Feel free to layer it and make a double-decker grilled cheese sandwich. Add ham or bacon for extra flavor and variety.

April 12 - National For Twelves Day

Happy National For Twelves Day! On April 12, (4/12), the nation will honor a magnificent number that holds significance in several ways.

We measure our days in two twelve hour sets. When we buy roses, eggs, and pastries, we purchase them by the dozen. How many months are in a year? Twelve. Of course, math lovers appreciate 12 because it has a perfect number of divisors.

Sports fans remember all the great athletes in every sport who have worn that fabulous number. For example, Terry Bradshaw, John Stockton, Jim Kelly, Dwight Howard, and Joe Namath come to mind.

And football fans wear the number to represent themselves as the twelfth member of their favorite team. These vital members of the football team support players on and off the field.

Especially integral to the success of the players and the teams, the celebration focuses on the fans who inspire their teams to be at their best every day.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Honor the grand number twelve by posting a picture of a dozen things!

  • • Roses, carton of eggs, or even a listicle of the twelve steps you’ll take to reach your New Year’s goals.
  • • Posting a picture wearing your favorite athlete’s 12 jersey!
  • • Taking pictures of the number twelve when you see it.
Twelve is such a sublime number. National Day Calendar® does, after all, Celebrate Every Day®. #412 will be an official day to celebrate it! Use #NationalForTwelvesDay or #412 to share on social media.

HISTORY

In 2019, the Honolulu Sea Hawkers founded National For Twelves Day to celebrate the 12s on a football team – the fans! Their loyalty and support inspire players all season long – #NationalForTwelvesDay is dedicated to all the fans.

The Registrar at National Day Calendar® proclaimed National For Twelves Day to be observed annually on April 12.
