October 1 - National Roller Skating Month

Happy National Roller Skating Month! If there’s not snow on the ground, now’s the time to give roller skating (or roller blading, whichever you want to call it) a chance!

Roller skates have been around since the mid-1700s when the first recorded inventor of the skates, Belgian Freemason, clock-maker, musical-instrument maker, and inventor John Joseph Merlin, rolled into a lavish party in London… and crashed into a huge mirror, sustaining a few small injuries.

It is believed that Merlin wore his skates as part of the publicity stunts that he often used to promote his inventions and the museum.

Stopping and maneuvering were a problem that Merlin couldn't resolve with skating skill or inventions, so he exhibited and demonstrated his roller skates but did not patent them.

Roller skates were actually patented American inventor James Leonard Plimpton. He was known for changing the skating world with his patented roller skates in 1863.

Plimpton's roller skates were safer and easier to use than the existing versions, his "rocker skates" or quad skates allowed people to steer just by leaning to the left or the right.

Today, roller skates are everywhere! Many retro-themed restaurants still have their waiters and waitresses rolling around in them.

People also roller blade for exercise. It’s a fun, healthy hobby to get into!

HOW TO OBSERVE

Get together with a group of friends and go roller skating. Take some fun pictures or videos, and use #RollerSkatingMonth to post on social media.

There are even a few fun tricks you can try! See who can stay standing the longest. (Falling on roller skates doesn’t hurt that bad. Promise.)

October 1 - National Fire Pup Day

Happy National Fire Pup Day! On October 1, today recognizes the canine firefighters that have long been members of fire departments across the country.

While the Dalmatian’s origin is unknown, their use in firehouses began during the 1700s.

Trained as a carriage dog, the Dalmatian’s agility transferred quickly to horse-drawn fire engines.

Even though Dalmatians weren’t the only dogs fit for carriage work, they were the ones who mostly filled the role of fire dogs. They were also easily identified by their spotted and speckled coats.

In the days of the horse-drawn fire carts, they provided a valuable service, having a natural affinity to horses.

The Dalmatian's duty was to run alongside the horses. They ran in front of or beneath the wagon axles in helping to clear the way.

Long after the red engines replaced horse-drawn wagons, the Dalmatian remains a recognizable tradition in fire stations across the country.

These energetic firehouse mascots continue to serve to educate the public about fire safety. They also represent past fire pups in honor of their heroism.
