May 9 - National Miniature Golf Day

Happy National Miniature Golf Day! Today annually recognized the second Saturday in May. This day is separate from Miniature Golf Day, which is celebrated worldwide on September 21.

Similar to the sport of golf, but as the name suggests it is a miniature version of the game.

While still played with a series of nine or eighteen holes, miniature golf courses are shorter, usually themed, and have a variety of obstacles that add to the difficulty of the game.

There also isn’t any need to call “FORE” since only putters are used in this version. The distances are too short (usually about ten yards) to use any of the other clubs in golf.

Most courses consist of concrete or artificial turf so don’t worry about replacing any divots, either! The game also goes by the names mini-golf, midget golf, putt-putt, and peewee golf.

Some of the more challenging miniature golf courses have waterfalls, caverns, and castles with drawbridges as part of their obstacle course.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Watch out for the water hazards and the windmill! Meet your friends at your local miniature golf course and have a fun-filled day. While you’re out putting, share your photos using #NationalMiniGolfDay.

The Illustrated London News had mention of the earliest documented mini-golf course in its June 8, 1912 edition.

The first standardized mini-golf courses to enter into commercial mass-production were the Thistle Dhu course in 1916 in Pinehurst, North Carolina, and the Tom Thumb patent of Garnet Carter from Lookout Mountain, Tennessee in 1927.

National Day Calendar® continues researching the origins of this miniature sport holiday.

Just watch out for the windmill.

May 9 - National Sleepover Day

Happy National Sleepover Day! On May 9, today (or tonight) provides an opportunity once again for girls to confide in their friends in a way that can be inspiring, therapeutic, and confidence-building.

Sleepovers play an important role in both friendships and memory-making. It’s a time when women and girls share stories and realize the more we’re different, the more we’re alike.

A sleepover offers more than just movies and gossip. It’s an opportunity to be among friends and be yourself. Let your hair down or put it up. Tell hair raising stories and laugh until you cry or cry until you laugh.

Either way, you’ll be among friends and everyone there thinks you’re smart and beautiful, strong, and courageous as well. And if they don’t. Well, they soon will because at sleepovers, we tend to bare our souls.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Celebrate with a sleepover. Bring out the pillows and comfy pjs. Pop lots of popcorn and pick out your favorite movies. Plan makeovers, manis, and pedis.

It’s an excellent time to catch up and unwind. Share your deepest secrets and express yourselves, too. Sleepovers encourage bonding and boost friendships as well.

Join in the celebration by sharing your sleepover memories by using #NationalSleepoverDay and #SleepintheBare on social media.

FUN FACT:

To kick off National Sleepover Day and #SleepInTheBare, American fashion influencer, reality television and social media personality, former beauty pageant title holder and actress Olivia Culpo kicked off New York’s biggest sleepover event in Times Square.

This took place on May 10, 2017 at the Pedestrian Plaza between 43rd and 44th Street at 3:00 p.m. EST, where attendees were treated to bareMinerals® makeovers snd Instagram-worthy moments, including customizable pillowcases, a giant bed, and more!

HISTORY

bareMinerals® and Cosmopolitan™ magazine created National Sleepover Day as a holiday to celebrate spontaneous sleepovers and bareMinerals®’ Original and Matte Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 15’s newest claim – Makeup So Pure You Can Sleep In It™.

The two brands are also encouraging women around the country to bare their souls, share their deepest beauty secrets, and express themselves through the hashtag #SleepInTheBare.

In 2017, the Registrar at National Day Calendar® declared the day to be observed annually on May 9.

May 9 - National Archery Day

Happy National Archery Day! On the second Saturday in May, today recognizes one of the oldest sports still in existence. Archery has been around since before 2800 B.C. when bows were being used for hunting and battle.

In 1900, the modern Olympic games introduced archery as an official event. However, it only appeared again in 1904, 1908 and 1920. Then once again after a long absence, archery returned in 1972.

In recent years, archery’s growing popularity is piquing people’s interest. One supporting reason points to the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP®) that began in Kentucky in 2002.

Since then, the program expanded to forty-seven states and ten countries, with over 2.1 million kids participating each year!

Archery has benefits as well. Did you know that besides improving upper body strength, archery improves mental focus? Other benefits of archery include:

  • • The sport (like many do) develops confidence.

  • • Archery creates a sense of accomplishment.

  • • It’s social! At events, people get to know one another and exchange tips, resources, and encouragement.

  • • Archery can be practiced all year long.

  • • Participants learn a lifelong respect for safety.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Celebrate National Archery in the Schools Program by sharing your archery activities using #NationalArcherySchoolsProgram on social media.

HISTORY

In March 2015, National Archery Day was submitted by the National Archery in the Schools Program. The second Saturday in May is generally the time the NASP tournament is held.

This is the largest archery tournament in the world. Each year kids from all over the United States look forward to traveling to Louisville, Kentucky, for this culminating event to end their school archery year.

The event draws over 11,500 students participating in NASP®!
In March 2015, the Registrar of National Day Calendar® proclaimed National Archery Day to be observed annually on the second Saturday of May.
