March 22 - National Goof Off Day

Happy National Goof Off Day! on March 22nd, each year gives everyone the opportunity to have a little extra fun. The day is also known as International Goof Off Day. Take a pause for the cause, America!

It is a day to relax, enjoy and goof off. Do something fun and leave the work until tomorrow. Everybody needs to take a break from time to time.

It is often so easy to get so involved in the work and pressures in our lives. So stop, take a break, find something different!

Let any goofy idea pop into your head. Make paper airplanes from seed packets. Doodle pictures of poodles in puddles in Peru. Play a game of Jenga with randomly stacked spice jars. Or do the obvious and spend the day in your pajamas doing nothing.

HOW TO OBSERVE

There are many different things that a person could do. Catch up on some sleep or read a good book. You might also watch a good movie or even play a board game. Maybe even get caught goofing off with some of your friends.

5 Great Ways to Goof Off With Your Kids

  • • Sock Races – When things have gotten mind-numbingly boring, this goofy game will bring about some giggles and definitely burn off some boredom. Empty out the sock drawers. Preferably mom and dad’s because the bigger the better. Make a pile on the floor. Each child starts with bare feet and the goal is to put as many socks on their feet before the sock pile is gone. They’ll look goofy doing it and goofy when they’re done, too. And, all the while they were playing, they were goofing off.
  • • Play Dress-Up – It doesn’t matter what age our kids are, playing dress-up allows them to act out. Bring out some old makeup, old clothes and use a hairbrush as a microphone. Crank up the music and let the lipsyncing begin. Share a few videos, laugh and make some memories, too.
  • • Charades – Play an old fashioned game of charades. Set a few parameters by selecting a set topic that will keep your children on course. For example, you may want to only act out one of these topics: Disney movies, international travel, or national days.
  • • Blanket Fort – This classic way to goof off can lead to naps, reading books or playing with other toys. But it’s also a surefire memory maker, too.
  • • Write a Song – Take a song the whole family likes and write a new verse to it.
Strictly speaking, goofing off is the avoidance of work. So whatever you do, try not to look like you are working.

HISTORY

Monica (Moeller) Dufour of Davidson, Michigan founded National Goof Off Day.  According to official records, the first celebration took place in 1976.

Dufour is the granddaughter of Chases' Calendar creator William D. Chase. Apparently as a ten-year old, Moeller was (what else) goofing off and called in to a radio interview her grandfather was doing.

In an interview with the Detroit Free Press in 1983, Moeller suggests the first event may have been a few years later.

Whenever the inaugural day took place, it’s no surprise National Goof Off Day was created by a kid with the direction to do things out of the ordinary.

What would you want to do to observe National Goof Off Day?

March 22 - World Mime Day

Happy World Mime Day! On March 22, today a worldwide initiative of the World Mime Organization to celebrate the Art of Mime and non-verbal communication.

Today celebrates the birthday of the legendary French actor and mime artist Marcel Marceau. Born in 1923, he most famous for his stage persona, "Bip the Clown".

Marceau referred to mime as the "art of silence" and he performed professionally worldwide for over sixty years.

The initiators for World Mime Day include the following:

  • • Marko Stojanović, a mime artist from Serbia and president of the World Mime Organization
  • • Ofer Blum, a mime artist from Israel and vice-president of the World Mime Organisation.
  • • Jean Bernard Laclotte, a mime artist from France.

Al three of them are former students of Marceau.

The three initiators are probably not the only people that thought of establishing the World Mime Day under this or any other name/title.

In 1998, Israeli mime artist Ofer Blum came to Serbia (at that time still called Yugoslavia) for a short tour. This had been organized by Marko Stojanovic, his friend and classmate from the Marceau International Mime School in Paris.

It was than that Blum and Stojanovic first spoke about establishing a World Mime Organization, not yet under that name and a World Mime Day or as they called it at that time "International Day of Mime".

Marceau was still alive during this, and so was his school. Unfortunately, Blum and Stojanovic were not aware of the seriousness of their ideas. They were also preoccupied with their careers.

In 2004, it was only that World Mime Organisation was officially registered as a Non-Governmental and Non-Profit organization in Serbia. This was where the paperwork was the easiest and the World Mime Day idea was back "on the table" (where it stayed until 2011).

Marceau passed from cardiac arrest in Cahors, Lot, France on September 22, 2007. He was 64. Again Blum and Stojanovic came back to the idea of establishing the World Mime Day to celebrate the day when Marceau was born.

Since 2011, World Mime Day has being celebrated in more and more countries each year on four continents.UnfortunatelyWorld Mime Day is not officially recognized by UNESCO.

In April 2011 Jean Bernard Laclotte has sent an e-mail to Stojanovic with the same idea and a developed concept of the "Journée Mondiale du Mime" except that he wanted to mark the day when Marceau had passed.

Thanks to Laclotte’s initiative, "Journée Mondiale du Mime" was celebrated in several countries around the world on September 22, 2011.

World Mime Day is celebrated on March 22 in most of the countries but there are still few countries, especially in South America celebrating it on September 22

World Mime Organisation recognizes "Journée Mondiale du Mime 2011" as the first World Mime Day celebrated.

World Mime Day is one of those ideas that occur on different sides of the planet in almost the same time, and it should belong to all humanity.
