May 7 - National Packaging Design Day

Happy National Packaging Design Day! On May 7 each year, today celebrates the art of packaging design as well as design professionals.

The global design community and those appreciative of beautiful, well-crafted packaging commemorate the day by sharing inspiring designs and exchanging ideas.

The day also encourages an awareness of the craftsmanship behind the package.

Living in the golden age of packaging, the packaging is now much more than a means to protect a product or display a name.

Packaging is the physical representation of a brand to the consumer. The packaging is compelling.

It’s not just what’s on the shelf that matters, but the unveiling process as well. The layers, the textures, the moment of anticipation before seeing the product.

People may not think of the packaging designers when purchasing a product or while opening a gift, but they exist, orchestrating the process from sketch to shelf.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Check out Design Packaging’s Top 10 Ways to Celebrate the day and share packaging you love. Here are other ways to celebrate the day:

  • • Judge a book by its cover. Packaging design goes into publishing as well. What makes you pick up a certain book?

  • • Study a creative packaging design. What caught your eye?

  • • Practice what you see. Incorporate elements of packaging design into your own design practices.

Give a shout out to an inspiring designer with #PackagingDesignDay.

HISTORY

May 7 - World Password Day

Happy World Password Day! Each year on the first Thursday in May, today promotes better password habits.

Passwords are critical gatekeepers to our digital identities, allowing us to access online shopping, dating, banking, social media, private work, and life communications.

In a cyber world, secure passwords are important. Other than keeping your information offline, long, unique and complex passwords protect your valuable information best.

Another tactic is changing your passwords every few months or any time you think your accounts have been compromised.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Celebrate the day by visiting the website below and taking the #WorldPasswordDay pledge. Share these password tips on social media as well.

  • • change an old password to a long, strong one

  • • turn on two-factor authentication for your important accounts

  • • password protect your wireless router

  • • don’t store passwords on your computer or phone

  • • log off when you’re done with a program

  • • periodically remove temporary internet files

HISTORY

In his 2005 book Perfect Password: Selection, Protection, Authentication, British television producer and security researcher Mark Burnett first encouraged people to have a “password day,” where they update important passwords.

Inspired by his idea, Intel® Security took the initiative to declare the first Thursday in May World Password Day in May 2013.

In 2016, Big Monocle submitted National Password Day, which is meant to create awareness of the need for good password security.

The Registrar of National Day Calendar®  has designated the first Thursday of May of each year as World Password Day.
