September 20 - National Punch Day

Happy National Punch Day! On September 20, today goes in several directions.

While one perspective suggests honoring tools used to make holes, another perspective points to a day created to throw a few punches at a punching bag.

However, National Day Calendar® will direct you toward the thirst-quenching version instead. They promise not to be punchy. Besides, this delicious, refreshing drink sparkles with celebration.

A wide assortment of drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, fall into the category of punch.  A combination of fruit juice and a carbonated beverage, the colorful, bubbly drink sparkles with party personality.

In fact, parties, weddings, and other celebrations serve punch as part of the centerpiece at the beverage table. Large wide bowls known as punch bowls provide a beautiful vessel for serving punch.

In the early 17th century, punch made its appearance. It’s believed sailors en route to England via India created the drink.  Punch quickly grew in popularity and soon spread to other countries.

The word "punch" is a loanword from Hindi panch (meaning five). Originally, punch was made with five ingredients: alcohol, sugar, lemon, water and tea or spices.  It was called paantsch.

Soft drink manufacturers today distribute many types of “fruit punch” beverages.  Most punch mixes are red in color.

However, despite the name, they contain a small fraction of fruit juice. Sugar, corn syrup, citric acid, and artificial flavors make up the main ingredients.

September 20 - Wife Appreciation Day

Happy National Wife Appreciation Day! On the third Sunday in September, this day provides an opportunity for any and all spouses to show appreciation to their wives.

The relationship between a husband and a wife takes balance. Every day, spouses do things for each other, sometimes without thinking.

Other times, work and responsibilities get in the way. This observance offers a way to remind husbands to show a little appreciation to their wives.

Happy wife, happy life. Am I right?

This particular observance sets aside time for couples who have no children. Not every woman is a mother, either by chance or by choice.

Since so many holidays celebrate families with children, this day offers a day for those who remained childless.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Couples may choose to celebrate the day traditionally with a gift of flowers, perfume, jewelry or clothing. However, other options include a day at a spa, tickets to a show or dinner at a nice restaurant.

A foot massage and cooking breakfast or dinner at home can also say, “Thank you for all of the things that you do every day. I appreciate them.”

Share your celebration using #WifeAppreciationDay to post on social media.

HISTORY

While National Day Calendar® did not uncover the source of the day, they did identify the underlying meaning of Wife Appreciation Day.

Even though it honors married women, they focus on honoring those who didn’t have children. The day makes up for Mother’s Day, when there are no children in the marriage.

If you are a husband, how can you appreciate your wife today?
