April 18 - National Record Store Day™

Happy National Record Store Day! On this day, owners, employees, and music lovers gather in the place that created a culture of its own.

From vinyl to digital and back to vinyl again, the brick and mortar store celebrates a love of not just the music, but the art of jacket covers, words, and style.

Through a variety of events, record stores across the country and the world hold one day events and promotions.

Even though independent record stores have dwindled in the last decade, around 1,400 still remain in operation in the United States.

Most of those are operating in major metropolitan areas like New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and Seattle.

However, other smaller metro areas also cater to vinyl and disc as well.

Think Duluth, Fargo, Des Moines, and Terre Haute. They all have record stores full of classic albums waiting for you to discover your favorite cover.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Visit your favorite record store online and give them a shoutout or buy a gift card to show your support. Afterwards, go home and play your favorite vinyl record find!

HISTORY

Founded in 2007 by a gathering of independent record store owners, the first National Record Store Day included Metallica meeting fans at Rasputin Music in San Francisco, California.

Since then, the celebration spread globally encompassing all genres of music and fandom.

April 18 - National Auctioneers Day

Happy National Auctioneers Day! Each year on the third Thursday in April, today recognizes those who hold auctions and take our bids all year long.

According to the National Auctioneers Association, it is estimated nearly a quarter-trillion dollars in goods and services are sold by professional auctioneer’s every year!

Going once! Going twice! SOLD!!

A sales method over two thousand years old, the rhythmic cadence used in The United States is uniquely American.

Thought to have developed during the Civil War, the rapidly punctuated chatter of these auctioneers not only gets the job done but makes it entertaining as well.

Elsewhere in the world, auctioneers take a more sedate approach. Both styles get the bids and sell the items on the auction block to the highest bidder.

Auctioneers provide a service to both the buyer and the seller. They must maintain high standards to stay competitive. These knowledgable business professionals know the products they sell.

They recognize quality and a deal when they see it, too. Auctioneers also provide services in times of great need, as well.

Often, a family needs to sell an estate or land to alleviate debt. An auctioneer provides professional guidance during a difficult time.

Across the country, a variety of auctions platforms take place. Whether auctioneers sell livestock, art, automobiles or surplus, an auction can be found near you. Left to the imagination, just about anything can be put up for auction.

HOW TO OBSEERVE

To celebrate National Auctioneers Day take part in the National Auctioneers Foundation’s (NFA) annual National Auctioneers Day drive.

Share your memories of auctions you’ve attended or give a shoutout to an auctioneer you know. Or simply share your thoughts about auctioneers using #NationalAuctioneersDay on social media.

HISTORY

While the founder of National Auctioneer Day is unknown, according to the National Auctioneers Association (NAA), the observance has been celebrated for over twenty-five years.

April 18 - National Lineman Appreciation Day

Happy National Lineman Appreciation Day! On April 18, today honors the men and women who work around the clock to keep the power going. If the power is on where you are reading this article, you likely have a lineman to thank.

From the power plant, the grid crisscrossing the country both above and underground and right up to the meters on our homes, these men and women build and maintain the system that keeps our nation running.

Regardless of the source, the electricity has to be transported by employing transformers and other equipment. Due to the dangerous conditions power poses, safety is of utmost importance for both the lineman and the consumer.

When mother nature destroys what our linemen have built up, they are on call to build it back up again as quickly as possible. These men and women work tirelessly to get emergency systems back in working order and urgently return service to remaining areas.

Even when there is no crisis, they work under dangerous conditions on a daily basis. Whether they are working in trenches, near water or on high towers, the risks are extreme.

HOW TO OBSERVE

You don’t have to know a lineman to celebrate this day. Give a shoutout on social media to lineman everywhere.

You can celebrate the day by thanking your local linemen by using #NationalLinemanAppreciationDay and #thankalineman on social media.

HISTORY

On April 10, 2013, U.S. Senate Resolution 95 recognized linemen across the country by setting April 18 as National Lineman Appreciation Day.
