October 7 - National Walk To School Day

Happy National Walk To School Day! The first Wednesday in October makes a perfect time to celebrate today.

Not only does the day encourage getting some exercise, but the weather is perfect for walking to school as well.

Walking is one of the best forms of exercise. It isn’t hard on our joints and feet like running and jogging but still gives us all the advantages.

The goal of this day is to raise awareness and support for the health, community and environmental benefits of regularly walking or biking to school.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Walk to school or work. Enjoy the weather. Take photos and post on social media using #WalkToSchoolDay.

HISTORY

Organized by the Partnership for a Walkable America (FHWA), National Walk to School Day in the United States began in 1997 as a one-day event aimed at building awareness for the need for walkable communities.

October 7 - National Coffee With A Cop Day

Happy National Coffee With A Cop Day! On the first Wednesday in October, today brings men and women in uniform together with their communities to connect over a cup of joe.

Inspired by the cliche about officers and their coffee shop donuts, the national observance encourages communities to sponsor an event that will bring citizens and those on patrol together.

The events provide an opportunity for open dialogue and improve communication. They also break down barriers and create a valuable bridge to relationships in our communities.

When officers hear their community’s needs from the people themselves, they’re better able to support them. The community as a whole will also be able to see officers as approachable and their ally in protecting and caring for their communities.

HOW TO OBSERVE

While many cities and towns across the country hold Coffee with a Cop events throughout the year, the first Wednesday in October is National Coffee with a Cop Day. Plan one now and several later in the year!

Find an event near you and join. Use #CoffeeWithACopDay in your sharing on social media.

HISTORY

In 2011, the Hawthorne Police Department in Hawthorne, California launched the idea of National Coffee With A Cop Day. In 2016, the first National Coffee with a Cop Day took place across the country.

They sought ways to interact with their community every day more successfully. As a result, they established a Coffee with a Cop event to do just that.

Throughout the year they make meaningful connections, and the idea has spread across the country to all fifty states!

October 7 - National Inner Beauty Day

Happy National Inner Beauty Day! On October 7, this day focuses on raising awareness and supporting victims of human trafficking.

Everyone has a story, a passion that expresses who we are as individuals. Our strength lies in embracing that story without filtering it through someone else’s definition of beauty.

When our core values reflect on the outside, we have given the world the gift we were born to give.

National Inner Beauty Day and the launching of its 2017-2018 #InnerBeauty Challenge coincided with the opening weekend of the2017 American thriller/drama film 'Trafficked'. The Inner Beauty Day team attended the movie’s Los Angeles premiere.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Donate to Saving Innocence to help continue their work with victims of human trafficking. Take the Inner Beauty Challenge.

“Each person taking up the challenge along with their friends, family, or anyone else they know is encouraged to give to a charitable anti-human trafficking organization of their choice.

The National Human Trafficking Referral Directory of the Polaris Project is a good resource for connecting people to service providers helping victims and survivors.

Polaris is a leading nonprofit, nongovernmental organization in this global fight and operates the National Human Trafficking Hotline (1-888-373-7888). Saving Innocence.

This is a Los Angeles-based nonprofit organization well known for its work in helping victims of trafficking. It has been a supporter of the #InnerBeauty Challenge from its inception. Donations can be made directly to Saving Innocence.”
