May 8 - National Have A Coke Day

Happy National Have A Coke Day! Each year on May 8, millions of people across the country celebrate today.

Coca-Cola®, often referred to as Coke, is a carbonated soft drink produced by The Coca-Cola® Company.

Since March 27, 1944, Coke is a registered trademark of The Coca-Cola® Company in the United States.

HISTORY

In the late 19th century, American Civil War veteran, biochemist and inventor Dr. John Stith Pemberton created Coca-Cola®. This occurred at at Pemberton’s Eagle Drug and Chemical House in Columbus, Georgia.

He intended to patent the beverage as medicine. However, American business tycoon Asa Griggs Candler bought out the business. Candler’s marketing tactics led Coke to its dominance of the world soft-drink market throughout the 20th century.
Coco-Cola® Timeline:

1891 – Bottling of Coco-Cola® begins for the first time at the Biedenharn Candy Company in Vicksburg, Mississippi.

1894 – The first outdoor wall advertisement promoting the Coca-Cola® drink was painted in Cartersville, Georgia

1914 – Atlanta’s Fleeman’s Pharmacy opens its doors. The longest-running commercial Coca-Cola soda fountain anywhere became a historic landmark of Atlanta and Coca-Cola. In 1995, however, the pharmacy closed its doors after eighty-one years.

1944 – The Coca-Cola® Company manufactures its one-billionth gallon of Coca-Cola® syrup on July 12th!

1955 – The company produces its first cans of Coke.

May 8 - National Provider Appreciation Day®

Happy National Provider Appreciation Day®! Also known as National Child Care Provider Day, this day is annually celebrated on the Friday before Mother’s Day.

The special day recognizes any and all child care providers, teachers, and other educators of young children everywhere.

Child care providers deserve a big “thank you” for their dedication, commitment, and compassion.

Less than one-third of the children in America have a full-time stay-at-home parent. Since the child care provider is a partner in raising children, parents carefully choose their child care provider.

It may be a private home daycare, a daycare center, an in-home provider, or a live-in nanny. Parents put their trust in their childcare providers as they share child-rearing responsibilities with them.

HOW TO OBSERVE

HISTORY

In 1996, National Provider Appreciation Day® was started by a group of volunteers in New Jersey. This group saw the need to recognize the tireless efforts of providers who care for children of working parents.

Each year since momentum and support have grown, and recognition currently includes individual and government organizations throughout the United States. A proclamation is signed each year by many of the state governors.
