May 16 - National Strawberry Milkshake Day

Happy National Strawberry Milkshake Day! On May 16, today observes the classic, rich and creamy treat that combines sweet strawberries with soft serve vanilla ice cream.

Also, since it's made with frozen fruit, you can make it year-round.

Strawberries are in season from late April through August. With that said, there's no time like the present to take full advantage of them for a refreshing treat during the warmer weather.

Many love this flavor of strawberry milkshake because it’s SO EASY to make. You only need FOUR ingredients:

  • • hulled strawberries

  • • milk

  • • vanilla ice cream

  • • vanilla extract

Afterwards, all you have to do is combine each of these ingredients together in a blender. If you use less milk and frozen strawberries, you may need a higher-powered blender.

One of the most commonly asked questions when it comes to milkshakes (in this case, obviously strawberry) is how to make them thicker for a super thick, extra creamy and naturally sweetened flavor.

While others think that this milkshake makes a pretty thick, creamy shake, there are two ways to increase the thickness.

Though this milkshake makes a pretty thick, creamy shake, there are two ways to increase the thickness.

First, you can add less milk. This recipe calls for one cup of milk, but you can add more or less depending on how thick you’d like your shake to be.

Second, you use frozen strawberries instead of fresh. Some like the way the fresh strawberries taste, but you can use frozen strawberries for an even thicker shake.

You can even complete the ensemble by placing strawberry halves and whipped cream on top. Upon serving, don’t forget a long straw!

Without a doubt, this vibrantly pink treat is truly spring in a glass!

May 16 - World Whiskey Day

Happy World Whiskey Day! Every year on March 27, whiskey fans from around the world come together to celebrate their favorite distilled alcoholic beverage.

International Whisk(e)y Day uses the parenthesis to indicate support of the Canadians, Scots and Japanese who spell it without an "e". The Irish and Americans include the letter e when writing out the word whiskey.

Whiskey is made from fermented grain mash. Corn, wheat, rye, and barley are the most common grains used to make whiskey.

Besides drinking whiskey for pleasure, many people drink it for their health. Whiskey contains a powerful antioxidant called ellagic acid, which helps prevent cancer.

Some people mix whisky with warm water and honey to soothe their sore throats. Others claim that drinking whiskey will prolong their life.

Whiskeys are broken down by the following nationalities:

  • • American whiskey – tends to be sweeter than other whiskeys and includes bourbon, rye, and Tennessee
  • • Scotch whisky – tends to have an earthy flavor and includes blended Scotch and single malt Scotch.
  • • Irish whiskey – tends to be light-bodied but more robust than Canadian whisky and includes Irish blend, single malt Irish, and single grain Irish.
  • • Canadian whisky – tends to be light-bodied and fruity and includes Canadian rye whisky.
These whiskeys get distilled in their respective country. The Irish are credited for being the first whiskey distillers.

The word whiskey comes from the Irish phrase, uisce beatha, or “water of life.” Each kind of whiskey has a specific alcohol content, which is indicated by proof.

If a whiskey is 100 proof, it means it contains fifty percent alcohol by volume.

HOW TO OBSERVE

People around the world are encouraged to drink whiskey on this day. There are a variety of whiskey brands from which to choose. Some of the most popular include:

  • • Jack Daniels®
  • • Johnnie Walker®
  • • Jim Beam®
  • • Dewar’s®
  • • Wild Turkey®
  • • Lark
  • • The Dubliner
  • • Caribou Crossing
If you don’t enjoy straight whiskey, you can try a whiskey cocktail. Some favorites include mint julep, whiskey sour, or a Manhattan.

You can either make your own concoction at home or go to a bar, where they will most likely have drink specials to celebrate the day.

Don’t forget to share your favorite whiskey brand or cocktail on social media with #InternationalWhiskeyDay.

WARNING: Please drink responsibly.

HISTORY

In 2009, International Whisk(e)y Day was launched during the Whiskey Day Festival in the northern Netherlands.
