July 11 - National Blueberry Muffin Day

Happy National Blueberry Muffin Day! On July 11, today gives us a great reason to get up in the morning and celebrate!

Americans love their blueberry muffins so much, it’s their number one favorite muffin flavor. Whether it is for breakfast or a snack, blueberry muffins are melt-in-your-mouth delicious.

While enjoying a delicious blueberry muffin, consider the powerhouse the blueberry is.

This once wild berry became domesticated during the early 1900s thanks to the observations of New Jersey agricultural specialist Elizabeth Coleman White and the research of American botanist Dr. Frederick V. Coville.

Before their efforts, wild blueberries were never successfully transplanted and raised in any farming operation for personal or commercial production. The only way to enjoy fresh blueberries was to seek them out where they grew naturally.

Today, we can enjoy the abundant potassium, vitamin C and B6, and other health benefits of the blueberry much more readily than they did one hundred and twenty years ago.

We bake them into muffins and eat them by the handfuls. They are so likable that we celebrate blueberries as a popsiclecheesecake and a popover day, too! Don’t forget, July is also National Blueberry Month.

HOW TO OBSERVE

While celebrating the day, be sure to make a few for co-workers and family, too. It’s not a celebration if you don’t share. It is America’s favorite muffin after all!

National Day Calendar® has provided a blueberry muffin recipe to try below! If you don’t bake, be sure to stop by your favorite bakery and pick up a few. Give them a shout out as well.

July 11 - National 7-Eleven® Day

Happy National 7-Eleven® Day! On July 11, one convenience chain celebrates with specials today! Conveniently scheduled on 7-11 of each year, the day often features one of their signature items, the Slurpee®.

The day focuses on franchise customers. The chain offers discounts and often free Slurpee® in their many flavors.

Since July is known for its summer heat, the icy cold beverage is a popular choice for cooling off all summer long.

The Slurpee® debuted in 1966. While the machine already existed, 7-Eleven® modified the machine made by American inventor and businessman Omar B. Knedlik, which was used to make the Icee®, and then branded and licensed the frozen drink under the name Slurpee®.

Then-American in-house ad agency director Bob Stanford, gave the sweet, icy drink the name for the sound it makes as it is sucked through a straw.

In a 1967 meeting, he later explained, "We added the two e’s to make a noun. It was just a fun name and we decided to go with it."

In 1990, brain freeze was often used as a sports term to refer to athletes who faltered on the field. It also applied to the side effects of medications, especially if they affected our mental capacity.

However, immediately after 7-Eleven® supposedly redefined the phrase, sports columnists quickly reused the phrase to their benefit.

Athletes still had a brain freeze when they made an error, but the columnists cleverly explained the player must have had a Slurpee before taking the field.

In 1991, the term "brain freeze" had existed before 7-Eleven® commandeered it to replace ice cream headache or the more technical cold stimulus headache.

Brain Freeze Tips

Of course, brain freeze is inevitable if you drink a frozen beverage too fast. In preparation for the day, National Day Calendar® offer a few tips.

  1. 1. Put down the drink.

  1. 2. Sip from a warmer liquid.

  1. 3. If a warmer liquid isn’t available, press your tongue against the roof of your mouth.

  1. 4. Cover your mouth and nose with your hand.

  1. 5. Breath through your nose. This allows warmer air to circulate through your sinus passages.

  1. 6. Return to drinking your Slurpee at a slower pace.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Go to your local 7-Eleven® and get a free Slurpee® in your favorite flavor. Share on social media and include #National7ElevenDay.

HISTORY

In 2002, 7-Eleven® first celebrated 7-Eleven Day®. They encouraged customers to visit their local 7-Eleven® to enjoy a free beverage as a thank you to the 7-Eleven® customers.

The company, which is considered the first convenience store, started in 1927 under the name of Southland Ice Company with the logo Totem. This was because people could conveniently “tote ’em” home their items.

However, it wasn’t until 1947 when the company expanded its hours to from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. that it changed its name.

What is your favorite flavor of Slurpee®?
