November 6 - National Saxophone Day

Happy National Saxophone Day! On November 6, today commemorates the birth of the woodwind’s Belgian inventor and musician Antoine-Joseph "Adolphe" Sax. The saxophone is one of the main instruments in jazz music.

Born on November 6, 1814, Sax invented many musical instruments including the saxophone.

Years later, he constructed his eponymous instrument in several sizes in the early 1840s.

However, Sax would never have invented the saxophone had he not cheated death throughout most of his life.

• When he was two years old, he fell out of a second story window and fractured his skull.

• When he was six, he mistakenly drank boric acid.

• When he was nine, he fell over a small cliff and broke his leg.

• When he was eleven, he contracted measles and was in a coma for nine days.

• When he was fourteen, he broke his arm when he caught it in a carriage door.

• When he was nineteen, he was struck on the head by a falling brick.

• When he was twenty-three, he almost died from the effects of tainted wine.

• When he was twenty-nine, he invented the saxophone.

• On June 28, 1846, he received a fifteen-year patent for the instrument.

The patent encompassed fourteen different versions of the fundamental design, split into two categories of seven instruments each and ranging from sopranino to contrabass.

After Sax’s patent expired in 1866, several saxophonists and instrument manufacturers implemented their own improvements to the original design and key work.

Over the years, many great saxophone masters have graced the world with their music.
