January 12 - National Kiss A Ginger Day

Happy National Kiss A Ginger Day! On January 11th, everyone is encouraged to find your favorite redhead and give them a peck on this day.

Created to support a more positive spin than its counterpart, National Kiss a Ginger Day brings sweet kisses to redheads who may have once been teased for the color of their hair.

The red hair gene is recessive and requires two copies for it to present itself. Even then there is no guarantee it will. If both parents have the gene, there is a one in four chance that they will have a redheaded child.

Most natural-born redheads (yes, some of us like the bottle) have brown eyes, followed by green or hazel. Coming in at one percent of the world’s population, the blue-eyed ginger is the rarest kind.  So, if you give one of these ginger’s a kiss, consider yourself lucky.

Many auburns feel like outcasts for having red hair. This celebration empowers redheads to feel confident, look amazing, and rock their beauty. Red hair is more than a color; it’s a lifestyle.

Besides, redheads are rare. Less than two percent of the population are crowned with red hair. And those that are may very well be left-handed, too.

HOW TO OBSERVE

It’s easy. Kiss a ginger! And it goes without saying, if you don’t have permission to kiss your favorite ginger, don’t. Use #KissAGingerDay to share on social media.

HISTORY

Canadian actor Derek Forgie founded National Kiss a Ginger Day in 2009 as an alternative positive celebration of redheads uniqueness as opposed to another day that could often accelerate into bullying.

January 12 - National Pharmacist Day

Happy National Pharmacist Day! On January 12, this day annually recognizes and honors all pharmacists across the nation.

The role of pharmacists has shifted over the years. Where once they served as the classical “lick, stick and pour” dispensary, they now serve as an integrated member of the health care team. They are directly involved in patient care and often play a vital role in a patient’s recovery.

Historically, pharmacists primarily checked and distributed drugs to doctors for patient prescribed medication. In modern times, pharmacists advise patients and health care providers on the selection, dosages, interactions and the side effects of prescriptions.

Additionally, their role includes being a learned intermediary between a prescriber and a patient. Monitoring the health and progress of patients, pharmacists can then ensure the safe and effective use of medication.

Pharmacists work long hours, usually standing the entire time. Along with dispensing pills and providing advice on medications, pharmacists also administer immunizations. Pharmacists who conduct research discover and test new medications as well.

  •   Do you wonder how English writer Dame Agatha Christie came to know so much about poisons for her murder mysteries? She was once a pharmacy dispenser during World War I.
  •   Coca-Cola®, Pepsi®, Dr. Pepper®, and ginger ale were all invented by pharmacists
  •   Before running for President of the United States, American politician and former 38th U.S. Vice President Hubert Humphrey earned his pharmacy license and worked in his father’s pharmacy.
  •   English-born American industrialist and candlemaker William Procter, Jr. dedicated his career to the science of pharmacy. He wrote the first textbook on pharmacy for students in the United States and advocated for the founding of the American Pharmaceutical Association (APhA). His dedication earned him the name Father of Pharmacy.

    HOW TO OBSERVE

  • Anyone who has required the services of a pharmacist, take time to thank them today. Give them a shout out. Whether they work in a facility or local pharmacy, they will appreciate the good word. If you’re considering a career, learn more about pharmacy. Use #NationalPharmacistDay to post on social media.

HISTORY

While National Day Calendar® were unable to find the exact creator of this observance, it is indicated that it is likely an association of pharmaceutical groups that are founders.

January 12 - François Girard

Happy 57th Birthday, François Girard! Born today in 1963, this French-Canadian screenwriter and film director was born in St-FélicienQuebec, Canada. His career began years later on the Montreal art video circuit.

A filmmaker armed with both intelligence and unique vision, he managed to stake a claim for himself on the map of international cinema with only a handful of credits to his name.

However, Girard is best known for co-writing and directing the 1993 Canadian biographical-anthology drama/histroical drama film ‘Thirty-Two Short Films About Glenn Gould’.

In this episodic fusion of documentary and biographical drama, Girard explores the life of the eponymous classical Canadian pianist, who became one of the best-known and most-celebrated classical pianists of the 20th century.

Through thirty-two vignettes, Girard brings about a series of brief, fictional reenactments as well as real interviews with those who knew the fastidious musician. He was renowned as an interpreter of the keyboard works of Johann Sebastian Bach.

After distinguishing himself as a prodigy at a very young age, the enigmatic Gould (Colm Feore) grows up to dissect the accepted rules of musical theory, and eventually refuses to perform before an audience. He also becomes addicted to prescription pills. In real life, Gould passed from a severe stroke at age 50, just nine days after his birthday.

Girard has been active from 1990–present.
