February 28 - Vsevolod Pudovkin

Happy Birthday, Vsevolod Pudovkin! Born today in 1893 as Vsevolod Illarionovich Pudovkin, this Russian and Soviet actor, screenwriter and film director had developed influential theories of montage.

Among his credits, Pudovkin is best known for directing the 1928 Russian silent black and white drama/history film 'Potomok Chingiskhana' ('Storm Over Asia').

The film follows the lowly Mongolian trapper Bair (Valery Inkijinoff). He is shunned by his fellow trappers for fighting with a trader, flees his trading post and joins the Soviet partisans trying to oust the occupying British forces.

After Bair is captured and shot by the British, they find an amulet on him suggesting he is descended from Genghis Khan. The soldiers nurse Bair back to health and use him to establish a puppet government, not realizing their plan will backfire when the puppet breaks his strings.

Pudovkin's masterpieces are often contrasted with those of his contemporary Sergei M. Eisenstein, but whereas Eisenstein utilized montage to glorify the power of the masses, Pudovkin preferred to concentrate on the courage and resilience of individuals. He was later granted the title of People's Artist of the USSR in 1948.

Pudovkin had been active from 1919–1953.
