Happy Birthday, Vincente Minnelli! Born today in 1903 as Lester Anthony Minnelli, this American stage and film director is best known for directing classic musicals.
These included the 1944 American Technicolor musical drama/family drama film 'Meet Me in St. Louis', the 1951 American Technicolor musical comedy drama/romance film 'An American in Paris', the 1953 American Technicolor musical comedy/romance film 'The Band Wagon' and the 1958 American Metrocolor musical comedy/romance film 'Gigi'.
Minnelli was also known for directing non-musical features, such as the 1952 American black and white drama/melodrama film 'The Bad and the Beautiful', and the 1958 American Metrocolor drama/romance film 'Some Came Running'.
Two of Minnelli's films have won the Oscar for Best Picture. These include 'An American in Paris' at the 24th Academy Awards in late March 1952 and 'Gigi' at the 31st Academy Awards in early April 1959.
Minnelli had been active from 1928–1976.
