February 28 - Guy Maddin

Happy 64th Birthday, Guy Maddin! Born today in 1956, this Canadian installation artist, author, film editor, cinematographer, screenwriter and film director has made both features and short films.

Since completing his first film in 1985, Maddin has become one of Canada's most well-known and celebrated filmmakers. Throughout his career, he has made eleven feature films to his credit. Among these, one of his best known is the 2007 Canadian black and white/color drama/experimental film 'My Winnipeg'.

Maddin's other best known credits include the 2000 Canadian black and white/color historical drama/independent film 'The Saddest Music in the World' and the 2015 Canadian black and white/color fantasy drama/mystery film 'The Forbidden Room'.

Maddin is also best known for co-writing and directing the 1990 Canadian black and white drama/comedy-drama film 'Archangel'.

The film follows Lt. John Boles (Kyle McCulloch), a British soldier fighting in World War I and trapped in the icy Russian town of Archangel.

When Boles meets a local couple named Veronkha (Kathy Marykuca) and Philbin (Ari Cohen), he falls for Veronkha because she seems to be his late wife's doppleganger. What follows is a twisted love triangle, as Philbin -- an amnesiac -- forgets that he is married to Veronkha, while Boles begins to think that Veronkha is his dead wife.

Maddin has been active from 1985–present.
