Happy 74th Birthday, Luis Puenzo! Born today in 1946 as Luis Adalberto Puenzo, this Argentine screenplay writer, producer and film director works mainly in the cinema of Argentina, but has also worked in the United States.
Among his credits, Puenzo is best known for co-writing and directing the 1985 Argentine historical drama/independent film 'La historia oficial' ('The Official Story').
The film focuses on Alicia (Norma Aleandro), a high school history teacher who is leading a comfortable life with her husband, Roberto (Héctor Alterio), a businessman with ties to the military, and their adopted daughter.
When Alicia begins to wonder about the identity of the little girl's birth parents, she finds herself suspecting that her daughter may be the child of people abducted or killed by the government's brutal crackdown on leftist groups.
The following year, 'The Official Story' won an Oscar for Best International Feature Film at the 58th Academy Awards in late March 1986.
Puenzo has been active from 1973–present.
