Happy Birthday, John Frankenheimer! Born today in 1930 as John Michael Frankenheimer, this American film and television director is known for his social dramas and action/suspense films.
Among his credits, Frankenheimer is best known for directing the 1962 American black and white neo-noir psychological political thriller/drama film 'The Manchurian Candidate' and the 1966 American black and white science-fiction drama film 'Seconds'.
Frankenheimer's thirty feature films and over fifty plays for television were notable for their influence on contemporary thought. He became a pioneer of the "modern-day political thriller", having begun his career at the peak of the Cold War.
American film critic, film historian and author Leonard Maltin wrote that "in his time [1960s]... Frankenheimer worked with the top writers, producers and actors in a series of films that dealt with issues that were just on top of the moment—things that were facing us all."
Frankenheimer had been active from 1948–2002.
