Happy Birthday, Frank Tashlin! Born today in 1913 as Francis Fredrick von Taschlein (better known by his stage name Frank Tashlin),this American children's writer, illustrator, comics artist, cartoonist, animator, screenwriter and film director of comedy movies was also known as Tish Tash and Frank Tash.
In 1938, Tashlin worked for Disney in the story department. Later that same year, he left American film producer Leon Schlesinger's studio after his second term there. As opposed to the salary he made at Warner Bros. at $150 a week, he made three times less at Disney at only $50 a week.
Aside from his short cartoon features, as a filmmaker, Tashlin is best known for co-writing and directing the 1955 American Technicolor musical comedy romance film 'Artists and Models'.
The film follows painter Rick Todd (Dean Martin), who is having difficulty with his career. Because of this, he starts taking inspiration from the dreams of his friend and roommate, Eugene Fullstack (Jerry Lewis), a comic book fan who narrates an adventure story while he sleeps.
Unbeknown to Eugene, Abigail Parker (Dorothy Malone), the artist for his favorite comic book, lives in the same building with her roommate, Bessie Sparrowbush (Shirley MacLaine), the model for Abigail's drawings. Eventually, the two pairs meet, and Bessie takes to Eugene.
Tashlin had been active from 1930–1972.
