June 14 - Jay Roach

         

Happy 63rd Birthday, Jay Roach! Born today in 1957 as Matthew Jay Roach, this American screenwriter, film producer and film director is known for his hit American comedies.  

 
Roach originally wanted to go to law school after graduating from Stanford University. 

 
In 1993, Roach converted to Judaism before his marriage to American vocalist, guitarist, actress and songwriter Susanna Hoffs later that same year. 


Hoffs is best known as a co-founder and the lead singer of American pop rock band The Bangles. They have two children. 

 
Roach is close friends with Canadian actor, comedian, screenwriter, producer, and director Mike Myers, whom he met at a bar.  

 
Roach later directed Myers in the 1997 American spy/comedy film 'Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery' (or simply 'Austin Powers') and its sequels. 

 
Among his credits, Roach is best known for co-producing and directing the 2000 American comedy/romances film 'Meet the Parents'. De Niro also co-produced. 

 

The film starred Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, Blythe Danner, Teri Polo and Owen Wilson.

 

The film had been based off of the titular 1992 American independent comedy film by American director and screenwriter Greg Glienna and American screenwriter Mary Ruth Clarke. 

 
On a budget of $55 million, Roach's 'Meet the Parents' went on to gross $330.4 million at the box office. 

 
'Meet the Parents' went on to become one of the highest-grossing films of 2000, earning over $160 million in North America and over $330 million worldwide. It was well received by film critics and viewers alike, winning several awards and earning additional nominations.

The success of 'Meet the Parents' also inspired two sequels, namely the 2004 American comedy/farce film 'Meet the Fockers' and the 2010 American comedy/romance film 'Little Fockers'.  

 
The former was directed by Roach, but the latter was directed by American film director, film producer, screenwriter, playwright, and actor Paul Weitz, respectively. For 'Little Fockers'. Roach co-produced both, as well as De Niro. 

 
In the mid-200s, Roach served as a co-producer on American comedian, screenwriter, director, actor, and producer Larry Charles' 2006 British-American comedy/mockumentary film 'Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan' (more commonly known simply as 'Borat'). 

 
Roach also spent time as a producer on a number of films. These include the 2004 American romance/comedy film '50 First Dates', the 2005 British-American science fiction comedy film 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' and the 2015 American comedy film 'Sisters'. 

 
In the late 2000s, Roach directed the 2008 American HBO drama/political drama television film Recount. 


Four years later, he directed the 2012 American HBO drama/political drama television film Game Change. 

 
Roach is also known for directing the American comedy/comedy of manners film 'Dinner For Schmucks', the 2012 American political comedy/satire film 'The Campaign' and the 2016 American biographical drama/history film 'All the Way. 


The film had been based on the titular Tony-Award winning play by American playwright, screenwriter, and actor Robert Schenkkan. 

 
Roach's twelfth film, the 2015 American biographical drama/crime film 'Trumbo', was released on November 6, 2015. He had produced each of these films under his Everyman Pictures banner. 

 
Roach may have started out as a comedy director, but his focus lately has been on politically and socially relevant topics. 

 
Roach has been active from 1986–present.
