Today observes the 245th birthday in recognizing any and all of the brave men and women of whom have made the ultimate sacrifice in serving the nation. They will always answer the call to protect America no matter the challenges we face as a country.
Formed from amateur troops of volunteer soldiers defending colonies against British tyranny, the oldest military force in the United States began before the United States formally existed.
Their forces consisted of mostly inexperienced militiamen commanded by independent colonial armies.
According to battlefield.org, there were never more than forty-eight thousand continental soldiers at one time.
