March 13 - Henry Hathaway/33rd SXSW Film Festival Begins


Happy Birthday, Henry Hathaway! Born today in 1898 as Marquis Henri Léopold de Fiennes, this American film producer and film director is best known as a director of Westerns. Hathaway is especially known for starring Randolph Scott is his Westerns as well.  
  
Among this genre, Hathaway is best known for directing the 1969 American Technicolor Western drama film 'True Grit' starring John Wayne as U.S. Marshal Reuben "Rooster" J. Cogburn 
  
The following year, The Duke received his first and only Oscar for his performance at the 42nd Academy Awards in early April 1970. 
  
In 2010, 'True Grit' was adapted again by the Coen brothers, starring Josh BrolinMatt DamonHailee Steinfeld and Jeff Bridges as "Rooster" Cogburn. 
  
Aside from Westerns, Hathaway has also directed Gary Cooper in seven films. 

The most notable of these is the 1935 American black and white drama/fantasy film 'Peter Ibbetson', with Cooper playing the titular role. 
  
Hathaway had been active from 1925–1974.

Today, the 33rd SXSW Film Festival officially begins! Actually, its officially cancelled due to coronavirus.
