March 13 - André Téchiné

Happy 77th Birthday, André Téchiné! Born today in 1943, this French screenwriter and film director has a long and distinguished career that places him among the most accomplished post-New Wave French film directors.

Among his credits, Téchiné is best known for co-writing and directing the 1994 French drama/comedy-drama film 'Les Roseaux sauvages' ('Wild Reeds').

Set in southwest France in 1962, the film tells of how at a boarding school, timid student François Forestier (Gaël Morel) discovers his latent homosexuality when he enters into an erotic relationship with farm boy Serge Bartolo (Stéphane Rideau).

A bizarre love triangle soon forms between Francois, his best friend Maïté Alvarez (Élodie Bouchez) and Serge while the French Algerian war rages in the background, paralleling the tumult of self-discovery that comes at the crossroads between youth and adulthood.

The following year, 'Wild Reeds' was selected as the French entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 67th Academy Awards in late March 1995, but not nominated.

One of Téchiné's trademarks is the lyrical examination of human relations in a sensitive but unsentimental way, as can be seen in his most acclaimed films. This also includes the 1993 French drama film 'Ma saison préférée' ('My Favorite Season').

Téchiné has been active from 1966–present.
