Happy Birthday, Luis Buñuel! Born today in 1900 as Luis Buñuel Portolés, this Spanish filmmaker, naturalized Mexican in 1949, had worked in France, Mexico and Spain. He is considered the father of cinematic Surrealism, and is one of the most original directors in the history of the film medium.

This includes documentary, melodrama, satire, musical, erotica, comedy, romance, costume dramas, fantasy, crime film, adventure, western and experimental film.
Despite this variety, filmmaker American film director, screenwriter, actor, and visual artist John Huston believed that, regardless of genre, a Buñuel film is so distinctive as to be instantly recognizable, or, as Swedish director, writer, and producer Ingmar Bergman put it, "Buñuel nearly always made Buñuel films".
Seven of Buñuel's films are included in Sight & Sound's 2012 critics' poll of the top 250 films of all time. Fifteen of his films are included in the They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? list of the 1,000 greatest films of all time.
For this, he ranks second only to French-Swiss film director, screenwriter and film critic Jean-Luc Godard, with sixteen, and he ranks number 13 on their list of the top 250 directors.
