Happy 61st Birthday, Frank Darabont! Born today in 1959 as Frank Árpád Darabont, this Hungarian-American screenwriter, producer and film director has been nominated for three Academy Awards and a Golden Globe Award.
In his early career, Darabont was primarily a screenwriter for horror films such as the 1987 American fantasy/mystery slasher film 'A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors', the 1988 American science fiction horror thriller/fantasy film 'The Blob' and the 1989 American science fiction horror drama/independent film 'The Fly II'.
However, Darabont is best known for writing and directing the 1994 American drama/crime film 'The Shawshank Redemption'. The film was based off of Stephen King's 1982 American novella "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" from his 1982 collection Different Seasons, subtitled "Hope Springs Eternal".
The film later gained traction after its Oscar nominations at the 67th Academy Awards in late March, becoming the most rented film of 1995, and is today considered by many to be one of the greatest films ever made. It currently sits at #1 on IMDb's Top 250 list.
Darabont is also known for later adapting another of King's novels, being the 1996 American serial novel "The Green Mile". Three years later, Darabont co-wrote and directed the eponymous three-hour plus 1999 American fantasy/crime drama film.
In 2010, Darabont developed AMC's American post-apocalyptic horror television series "The Walking Dead" (2010 – present). The program was based off of the American post-apocalyptic comic book series (October 2003 – July 2019) by American comic book writer Robert Kirkman, American comic book artist Tony Moore, and British comic book artist Charlie Adlard.
Darabont has been active from 1981–present.
