January 10 - Chang Cheh


Happy Birthday, Chang Cheh! Born today in 1924 as Zhāng Chè, this Chinese lyricist, screenwriter, producer and filmmaker was active in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. 

During the 1970s, he was the leading Martial Arts director in Hong Kong. Cheh directed close to one hundred films in Greater China, the majority of them with the Shaw Brothers Studio in Hong Kong. 

Of these, he is best known for co-writing and directing the 1978 cult Hong Kong martial arts drama/action film ' Dú' ('Five Deadly Venoms').  

His influence on other filmmakers included Hong Kong film director, producer and screenwriter John Woo (‘The Killer’) and Hong Kong-based Chinese actor, filmmaker, choreographer and martial artist Lau Kar-leung (‘The 36th Chamber of Shaolin’). 

Cheh made famous such Hong Kong stars as Hong Kong-based actor and stuntman Phillip Kwok, 1970s Hong Kong martial arts film star Alexander Fu Sheng and Hong Kong actor Ti Lung. 

Cheh had been active from 1967–1993.
