January 05 - National Screenwriters Day

Happy National Screenwriters Day! On January 5, when the credits roll on your favorite television show or film, feel free to admire the writers today!
  

You’ve probably heard of American filmmaker Steven Spielberg, who is known for 'Raiders of The Lost Ark', 'E.T.: the Extra-Terrestrial' and 'Saving Private Ryan'. But did you know that Spielberg didn’t write any of those films? 

In fact, they were all written by American screenwriter, director and producer Lawerence Kasdan ('Body Heat', 'The Big Chill', 'The Accidental Tourist'), American film and television screenwriter and an activist for Tibetan freedom Melissa Mathison and American film and television writer and television producer Robert Rodat, respectively).

Inside the industry, these screenwriters are well known for their ability to crack the story, create great roles for actors, and write memorable dialogue.  But there are also writers in living rooms all around the world, tapping away at their keyboards, writing what could be the next breakout feature.

January 05 - Bradley Cooper

Happy 45th Birthday, Bradley Cooper! Born today in 1975 as Bradley Charles Cooper, this American actor and filmmaker has been nominated for many awards.

These accolades include seven Academy Awards and a Tony Award. He has even won a Grammy Award and a BAFTA Award.

As an actor, Cooper is best known for co-starring in the 2009 American comedy film ‘The Hangover’, the 2013 American black comedy crime/drama film ‘American Hustle’.

For the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films, he co-starred in the 2014 American superhero sci-fi/adventure film ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

This also includes the 2018 American superhero action/adventure film ‘Avengers: Infinity War’. 

For these two films, Cooper reprised his role twice as providing the voice for Rocket Raccoon.  

As a filmmaker, Cooper is best known for co-writing, co-producing, co-starring and directing the 2018 American romantic musical drama film 'A Star is Born'. In the film, Cooper co-stars along with Lady Gaga.

Cooper has been active from 1999–present.

January 05 - Forough Farrokhzad

Happy Birthday, Forough Farrokhzad! Born today in 1934, this influential Iranian poet and filmmaker was a controversial modernist poet and an iconoclast, writing from a female point of view. 

Farrokhzad is best known for writing, directing and co-narrating (along with her second and final husband, Iranian filmmaker and literary figure Ebrahim Golestan). 

This was the acclaimed twenty-six-minute 1963 Iranian black and white documentary short film 'Khaneh siah ast' ('The House Is Black').

The film takes an insinuative look at the leprosy-stuck colony of Tebriz in Iran, which has been completely neglected by the society.  

One of Iran's most revered female poets, Farrokhzad passed from a jeep accident on February 13, 1967. She was 32.

January 05 - Hayao Miyazaki

Happy 79th Birthday, Hayao Miyazaki! Born today in 1941, this Japanese manga artist, author, animator, screenwriter and film director was a co-founder of Studio Ghibli, a film and animation studio.

Among his credits, Miyazaki is known for directing ‘Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind’, ‘Castle in the Sky’, ‘My Neighbor Totoro’, ‘Kiki’s Delivery Service’, ‘Porco Rosso’, ‘Howl’s Movie Castle’, ‘Ponyo’ and ‘The Wind Rises’. 

However, Miyazaki is best known for directing the 1997 Japanese animated fantasy film ‘Mononoke-hime' (‘Princess Mononoke’) and the 2001 Japanese animated fantasy film ‘Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi’ (‘Spirited Away’). 

In 2016, Japanese film director Kaku Arakawa directed the Japanese television documentary film Never Ending Man.  

The documentary follows the Academy Award-winning animator and filmmaker Miyazaki in the wake of his decision to retire, including documenting the early production of his fourteen-minute 2018 Japanese animated short film 'Kemushi no Boro' (‘Boro the Caterpillar’).  

Miyazaki has attained international acclaim as a masterful storyteller and also as a maker of animated feature films. He is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished filmmakers in the animation business. 

Miyazaki has been active from 1963–present.
