Happy 79th Birthday, Hayao Miyazaki! Born today in 1941, this Japanese manga artist, author, animator, screenwriter and film director was a co-founder of Studio Ghibli, a film and animation studio.
The documentary follows the Academy Award-winning animator and filmmaker Miyazaki in the wake of his decision to retire, including documenting the early production of his fourteen-minute 2018 Japanese animated short film 'Kemushi no Boro' (‘Boro the Caterpillar’).
Miyazaki has attained international acclaim as a masterful storyteller and also as a maker of animated feature films. He is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished filmmakers in the animation business.
Miyazaki has been active from 1963–present.
Among his credits, Miyazaki is known for directing ‘Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind’, ‘Castle in the Sky’, ‘My Neighbor Totoro’, ‘Kiki’s Delivery Service’, ‘Porco Rosso’, ‘Howl’s Movie Castle’, ‘Ponyo’ and ‘The Wind Rises’.
However, Miyazaki is best known for directing the 1997 Japanese animated fantasy film ‘Mononoke-hime' (‘Princess Mononoke’) and the 2001 Japanese animated fantasy film ‘Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi’ (‘Spirited Away’).
In 2016, Japanese film director Kaku Arakawa directed the Japanese television documentary film Never Ending Man.
