Happy 48th Birthday, Asghar Farhadi! Born today in 1972, this Iranian screenwriter, film producer and film director has received two Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film for two of his features.
It was these films that made him one of the few directors worldwide who have won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film twice.
The first includes writing, producing and directing the 2011 Iranian drama/mystery film 'Jodaeíy-e Nadér az Simín' ('The Separation of Nader from Simin' or 'A Separation').
The second includes writing, co-producing and directing the 2016 Iranian drama/thriller film 'Forushande' ('The Salesman', released in France as 'Le Client').

The former film tells of when Nader (Payman Maadi), a bank employee, refuses to leave Tehran, his wife, Simin (Leila Hatami) sues for divorce in the hope that she can make a better life for their young daughter Termeh (Sarina Farhadi) abroad.
Nader needs someone to care for his father (Ali Asghar Shahbazi) while he's at work, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease. He then hires Razieh (Sareh Bayat), a married woman whose chador hides her pregnancy.
One day, after becoming angry with Razieh, Nader shoves her, and she has a miscarriage, leading Razieh's husband Hojjat (Shahab Hosseini) to take Nader to court.
The film premiered at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival. It received the Golden Bear for Best Film and the Silver Bears for Best Actress and Best Actor. For this, the film became the first Iranian feature to win the Golden Bear. This occurred in February 2011.
The following year, 'A Separation' won an Oscar for Best International Foreign Film at the 84th Academy Awards in late February 2012.
It was also nominated an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, making it the first non-English film in five years to achieve this.

In 2012, Farhadi was included on the annual Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world.
The latter film premiered in competition in the 69th Cannes Film Festival in May 2016, where it won two awards—Best Screenplay for Farhadi and Best Actor for Hosseini.
'The Salesman' later went on to receive more positive reviews, and won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. This occurred at the 89th Academy Awards in late February 2017.
However, Farhadi did not attend the event in protest of the U.S. Executive Order 13769 set into effect by 45th U.S. President Donald Trump.
Farhadi is also known for writing, producing and directing the 2009 Iranian drama/thriller film 'Dar bāre-ye Elly' ('About Elly').
This was Iran's official submission for the competition in the Foreign Film section at the 82nd Academy Awards in early March 2010. However, it did not win.
