September 19 - National Responsible Dog Ownership Day

Happy National Responsible Dog Ownership Day! On the third Saturday in September, today reminds pet owners to make a promise to your fur-ever friend.

The observance encourages current and future pet owners to commit to being responsible for their loyal hound. Being responsible protects not only the dog, but all of those who may be affected by him as well.

Dogs bring many benefits to our lives. Ensuring they remain healthy, happy, and safe is a vital part of our job as dog owners.

Part of caring for our animal includes:

• veterinary care
• training
• grooming
• exercise
• proper disposal of waste
• identifying household risks and dangers
• acceptable socialization
• registration according to local and state ordinances

We need to be on the lookout for their well-being and the well-being of those around them. Many do not take into consideration all of the care involved when taking in a canine companion.

Their size, energy, medical care, temperament, and many other needs are solely the dog owner’s responsibility.

HISTORY

The American Kennel Club (AKC) promotes Responsible Dog Ownership Days annually across the country.

Since at least September 17, 2003, (the 119th anniversary of the AKC), the observance has been encouraging dog owners to be the most respectful, caring, and responsible companions to their canine as they can be.

If you own a dog, are you a responsible owner?
