Happy National Hug Your Boss Day! On September 13, today is observed annually. Some people like this day. Others love it. Some are afraid of it. And then there are those who simply loathe it.
There are several factors that determine personal feelings about this holiday.
The frequency we see our bosses, or whether we work for a small or large company, play a role. How long we have been at a job may influence our feelings as well.
If you’re considering participating in this holiday, be sure to ask permission first. Be aware of sudden awkwardness that may follow.
However, according to the founders of the day, people who are comfortable hugging their bosses are more productive. People who are comfortable approaching their bosses for a hug probably like their bosses anyway.
In fact, according to a Hug Your Boss Day survey, sixty percent of respondents surveyed like their job – because of their boss. Bosses frequently influence decisions regarding job choices.
More than the people who tell us what to do, they’re our mentors as well. Think Yoda or Captain Kirk, but more huggable.
Former Boston Red Sox relief pitcher-turned bar owner Sam Malone (Ted Danson) from the American sitcom television series Cheers (1982–1993) comes to mind.
This also includes struggling small boutique bookshop owner Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan) of "The Shop Around the Corner" in the 1998 American drama/romantic comedy film 'You’ve Got Mail'.
Hopefully, your boss fits the huggable bill.
For others, breaking down that barrier might increase morale and motivation. When you see your boss as approachable, communication improves.
Also, hugs are a type of communication. Side hugs, one-armed hugs, long-distance hugs… you know…a hug.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Go up to your boss and give him or her a BIG hug! If that’s too much, maybe start with a fist bump or a dance-off. Show that your bosses hug and use #HugYourBossDay to post on social media.
