August 19 - Pablo Larraín

Happy 44th Birthday, Pablo Larraín! Born today in 1976 as Pablo Larraín Matte, this Chilean filmmaker has directed seven feature films and co-directed one television series.

Born in Santiago, Chile, Larraín is the son of conservative Chilean lawyer, university lecturer and politician (and later Independent Democrat Union senator) Hernán Larraín Fernández.

Fernández is the current Chilean Minister of Justice and Human rights appointed by current Chilean president Sebastián Piñera. Larraín's mother is the Chilean civil engineer, businesswoman and politician Magdalena Matte.

She is also a member of the Independent Democratic Union (UDI) and was currently Piñera's former minister of Housing and Urbanism.

Larraín had studied audiovisual communication at the University for the Arts, Sciences, and Communication in Santiago.

Among his credits, Larraín is best-known for directing the 2016 American/French/Chilean/Chinese/German/British biographical drama/history film 'Jackie'.

After her husband's assassination in Dallas, Texas, First Lady Jackie Kennedy's (Natalie Portman) world is completely shattered.

Traumatized and reeling with grief, over the course of the next week she must confront the unimaginable: consoling their two young children, vacating the home she painstakingly restored, and planning her husband's funeral.

'Jackie' quickly realizes that the next seven days will determine how history will define her husband's legacy - and how she herself will be remembered.

Larraín's feature was the final film released before English actor John Hurt's death on January 25, 2017. He was 77. In 'Jackie', Hurt was credited as The Priest.

American actress and filmmaker Greta Gerwig ('Lady Bird', 'Little Women') also co-stars as White House Social Secretary Nancy Tuckerman.

The most notable co-producers for 'Jackie' were Darren Aronofsky and American neuroscientist, film producer and writer Ari Handel.

The latter is known for collaborating with Aronofsky in co-writing 'The Fountain' (2006) and 'Noah' (2014). Handel also produced three other films by Aronofsky, including 'The Wrestler' (2008), 'Black Swan' (2010) and 'Mother!' (2017).

'Jackie' was written by American television producer, author, and screenwriter Noah Oppenheim.

Becoming president of NBC News in 2017, Oppenheim is known for attempting to stop American journalist Ronan Farrow's reporting on the Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse cases.

'Jackie' is partly based on American political journalist and historian Theodore H. White's Life magazine interview with the widow at Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, in November 1963.

'Jackie' was selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival in September 2016. It was late released in the United States on December 2, 2016, by Fox Searchlight Pictures to positive reviews.

The following year, 'Jackie' received three Oscar nominations for Best Actress, Best Original Score and Best Costume Design. However, the film won none of these. This occurred at the 89th Academy Awards in late February 2017.

According to Larraín's personal life, he is currently married to Chilean actress Antonia Zegers. She has appeared in a handful of her husband's features. They have two children together

Along with Argentinian-born Chilean director, screenwriter, editor and producer Sebastián Lelio, Larraín is Chile's greatest film director, as well as a major producer (through his company Fabula).

Not for the weak-hearted, his features are straightforward, generally aggressive and interspersed with violence, painting a hard-hitting portrait of his country.

Larraín has been active from 2006–present.
