Happy 92nd Birthday, James Ivory! Born today in 1928 as James Francis Ivory, this American screenwriter, producer and film director, for many years, has worked extensively with Indian-born film producer and director Ismail Merchant, his domestic as well as professional partner.
This also includes working with German-born British and American Booker prize-winning novelist, short story writer and two-time Academy Award-winning screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala.
Among his credits, Ivory is known for directing the 1992 British/Japanese/American drama/romance film 'Howard's End' and the 1993 British-American drama film 'The Remains of the Day'. Both films featured Sir Anthony Hopkins.
However, Ivory is best known for directing the 1985 British romance/drama film 'A Room with a View'.
The film was produced by Merchant, and the screenplay was written by Jhabvala. It was based off of English novelist, short story writer, essayist and librettist E. M. Forster's eponymous 1908 travel literature fiction novel.
Set in 1907, amidst the restrictive and repressed culture of Edwardian England, Lucy Honeychurch (Helena Bonham-Carter), a young Englishwoman, is touring Italy with her older cousin, Charlotte Bartlett (Maggie Smith).
At a hotel in Florence, Lucy meets the charming and free-spirited George Emerson (Julian Sands).
Although intrigued by George, once she's back in England, Lucy ponders settling down with the wealthy but staid Cecil Vyse (Daniel Day-Lewis). However, when George reappears in her life, Lucy must decide between him and Cecil.

Throughout the film, it closely follows the novel by use of chapter titles to distinguish thematic segments.
Upon release, 'A Room with a View' received universal critical acclaim and was a box-office success. On a budget of £2.3 million ($3 million), the film went on to gross $21 million at the box office.
The film won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture (Maggie Smith) in late January 1987. However, Smith was not present at the ceremony, so Ivory accepted the award on her behalf.
This included Best Actress (Maggie Smith), Best Supporting Actress (Judi Dench), Best Costume Design (Jenny Beavan, John Bright), Best Film (Ismail Merchant, James Ivory) and Best Production Design (Gianni Quaranta, Brian Ackland-Snow).
Eight days later, at the 59th Academy Awards, the film was nominated for eight Academy Awards (including Best Picture), and won three in March 30, 1987.
This included Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium (Ruth Prawer Jhabvala), Best Art Direction-Set Direction (Gianni Quaranta, Brian Ackland-Snow, Brian Savegar, Elio Altamura) and Best Costume Design (Jenny Beavan, John Bright).
However. Jhabvala was not present at the awards ceremony, so Ivory accepted the award on her behalf.
In 1999, the British Film Institute placed 'A Room with a View' 73rd on its list of the Top 100 British films of the 20th century.
Also that same year, 'The Remains of the Day' was mentioned in the HBO American crime drama television series The Sopranos (1999–2007) from the episode "College"(S01E05).
This was when Carmela (Edie Falco) later mentions to Father Phil (Paul Schulze) that she has the film with Emma Thompson.

On June 15, 2009, for TV Guide's revised list of the "Top 100 Episodes of All-Time", "College" was ranked in at #2.
Ivory is also best known for writing and co-producing Italian film director, producer, and screenwriter Luca Guadagnino's 2017 Italian/American/French/Brazilian coming-of-age romance/drama film 'Chiamami col tuo nome' ('Call Me by Your Name').
Among the film's accolades the following year, Ivory won a BAFTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 71st British Academy Film Awards in mid-February 2018.
The following month, Ivory won an Oscar for Best Writing Adapted Screenplay. This occurred at the 90th Academy Awards in early March 2018.
Ivory has been active from 1953–present.
