Scott was the younger brother of English filmmaker Sir Ridley Scott. Together, they both graduated from the Royal College of Art in London, England, United Kingdom.

The following year, 'Top Gun' was the winner of the 13th People's Choice Award for Best Motion Picture. This occurred in mid-March 1987.

Later that same month, the film won an Oscar for Best Music, Original Song. This was for the song Take My Breath Away by the American new wave band Berlin. This occurred at the 59th Academy Awards in late March 1987.

The film was also nominated for Best Sound, Best Film Editing and Best Effects, Sound Effects Editing. However, 'Top Gun' won none of these.

In the early 1990s, Scott was known for directing the 1991 American action buddy comedy film 'The Last Boy Scout' and the 1993 American romantic action/crime film 'True Romance'. The script was written by Quentin Tarantino.

In 2015, the United States Library of Congress selected 'Top Gun' for preservation in the National Film Registry, finding it "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

According to Rotten Tomatoes, 'Top Gun' currently has an overall rating of 54% based on reviews from fifty-seven critics.

Although successful at the box office, the website's critical consensus states: "Though it features some of the most memorable and electrifying aerial footage shot with an expert eye for action, Top Gun offers too little for non-adolescent viewers to chew on when its characters aren't in the air."

On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 50 out of 100 based on fifteen critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews". Audiences surveyed by CinemaScore gave the film a grade A on scale of A to F.

Roger Ebert gave the film 2.5 out of 4 stars, saying that "Movies like Top Gun are hard to review because the good parts are so good and the bad parts are so relentless.

The dogfights are absolutely the best since Clint Eastwood's electrifying aerial scenes in Firefox. But look out for the scenes where the people talk to one another."

In the early 2010s, Scott committed suicide after jumping off of the Vincent Thomas Bridge in the San Pedro port district of Los Angeles, California. This occurred on August 19, 2012. Scott was 68.

According to his personal life, Scott had been married three times. This was to English production designer Gerry Boldy (m. 1967; div. 1974), Glynis Staunton (m. 1986; div. 1987) and Donna W. Wilson (m. 1994). His two children survive him.

On AFI’s 100 Years...100 Quotes list, “I feel the need – the need for speed!” ranked in an #94.

A sequel, titled 'Top Gun Maverick:' is scheduled for release on December 23, 2020.
