Happy 53rd Birthday, Olivier Dahan! Born today in 1967, this French screenwriter and film director, in 1991, received a diploma in art at the Art school of Marseille. He then shot several short subjects and clips.
In the late 2000s, he made his third feature of which was one of the only French cinema films to win two Academy Awards, including the first acting Oscar in the French language.
This was in co-writing and directing the film of which he is best known, being the 2007 French biographical musical/drama film 'La Vie en rose'.
Shot on film, it tells of French singer-songwriter, cabaret performer and film actress Édith Piaf (Marion Cotillard) manages to achieve worldwide fame. This was even after being born into poverty and raised in a brothel.
Though her extraordinary voice and charisma open many doors that lead to friendships and romances, she experiences great personal loss, drug addiction and an early death from liver cancer
Piaf passed in her villa in the French Riviera located in Plascassier, Grasse, France on October 10, 1963. She was 47.
At only 4’ 10”, Piaf was also known as La Môme Piaf (The Little Sparrow).
Her death was mourned across France, and thousands lined the route of her funeral procession.
Her last words - “Every damn fool thing you do in this life you pay for.” – followed months of passing in and out of consciousness. She is buried in Paris next to her daughter Marcelle.
Today, Piaf is noted as France's national chanteuse and one of the country's most widely known international stars.
Piaf's music was often autobiographical and she specialized in chanson and torch ballads about love, loss and sorrow.
Piaf's most widely known songs include "L'Accordéoniste" (1940), her signature song "La Vie en Rose" (1946), "Hymne à l'amour" (1949), "Padam, padam..." (1951), "La Foule" (1957), "Milord" (1959) and "Non, je ne regret rien" (1960).
The following year after the release of 'La Vie en rose', the film won a Golden Globe for Best Actress – Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. This occurred at the 65th Golden Globe Awards in mid-January 2008.
The following month, 'La Vie en Rose' received four BAFTA Awards. These included Best Hairstyling and Makeup, Best Costume Design, Best Original Music, Best Actress in a Leading Role. This occurred at the 61st British Academy Film Awards in mid-February 2008.

Two days later, the film won two Oscars for Best Makeup and Hairstyling (Didier Lavergne, Jan Archibald) and Best Actress (both for Marion Cotillard). This occurred at the 80th Academy Awards on February 24, 2008.
Upon accepting the award, Cotillard credited Dahan, for changing her life in whole and as an actress.
Two years later, Dahan started to work on his 2010 French/American road/comedy-drama film 'My Own Love Song', released in April of that year. It starred Renée Zellweger, Forest Whitaker and Nick Nolte.
Since Piaf's death on October 10, 1963, several biographies and films (most notably Dahan's) have studied her life. Because of this, Piaf has become one of the most celebrated performers of the 20th century.
Dahan has been active from 1994–present.
