May 4 - National Star Wars Day

Happy National Star Wars Day! May the Fourth be with you each year on this day. Or is it, “May the force be with you?” It all depends on whether you like using puns or not.

Millions of fans, thousands of Star Wars enthusiasts and sci-fi geeks alike celebrate this day each year with marathons, parties and celebrations around the nation.

Star Wars fans didn’t first introduce the often quoted phrase on May 4. It originally started on 1979, when Britain had elected the first female Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher.

On May 4, the day she took office, the Conservative Party placed an advertisement in The London Evening News, which read, “May the Fourth Be with You".

In 2005, American filmmaker, philanthropist,  entrepreneur and creator of Star Wars George Lucas was asked during an interview on a German news television channel to say the famous sentence “May the Force Be with You.”

Upon doing so, the interpreter translated the sentence into German as "Am 4 Mai sind wir bei Ihnen." ("On May 4 we are with you."). German late-night television comedy talk show TV Total captured this and aired it on May 18, 2005.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Use #NationalStarWarsDay to post on social media. That is if Life Day is what you prefer instead, unless you're a two hundred-year-old Wookie from Kashyyyk.

Have a movie marathon (you can always skip the three prequels). This also includes the 1978 American television special sci-fi/comedy musical 'Star Wars Holiday Special'...with Bea Arthur as a cantina bartender. Because when you think of Star Wars, you think of Bea Arthur.

Lucas has rarely spoken about the notorious Holiday Special. However, he once opened up at a fan convention and famously said: “If I had the time and a sledgehammer, I would track down every copy of that show and smash it.”

However, it was the first appearance of Boba Fett, so at least it has that going for it.

But I digress...

Today, feel free to dress as a Storm Trooper, growl like Chewbacca, or mimic Darth Vader's breathing.

Duke it out with a buddy using some plastic light sabers. Break out all of your toys and memorabilia of nostalgic yore. Blast John Williams' majestic theme for all to hear.

And who better to thank than Mr. Lucas himself along with team at Industrial Light & Magic for making all of these characters, creatures and planet worlds possible?

And who the heck is American writer of fantasy and science fiction Alan Dean Foster?

Whether you're a fan of the film franchise or a die-hard uber nerd, feel free to celebrate today as you want in your own special form or fashion by paying homage to those space soap operas of which take place long ago in a galaxy far, far away....but somehow in the future.

And yes, this was a thing once...

HISTORY

In 2011, National Star Wars Day was first organized in Toronto, Ontario, Canada at the Toronto Underground Cinema.

Produced by Sean Ward and Alice Quinn, festivities included an Original Trilogy Trivia Game Show, a costume contest and the web’s best tribute films, mash-ups and parodies on the big screen.

May 4th was obviously chosen because of the play on words.

May the fourth be with you!

Greedo shot first! (I couldn't resist).

RIP Alec Guinness, Carrie Fisher, Kenneth Baker and Peter Mayhew.
