May 21 - Aditya Chopra

Happy 49th Birthday, Aditya Chopra! Born today in 1971, this Indian screenwriter, producer and director is the current Chairman of India's multi-national film, media and entertainment conglomerate Yash Raj Films (YRF).

This was after becoming the second person to hold that position in the company's history after British comedian, writer and actor Sanjeev Kohli.

Among his credits during the 2000s, Chopra is known for directing the 2000 Indian Hindi-language musical romantic drama film 'Mohabbatein' (transl. 'Love Stories'), the 2008 Indian romantic drama Bollywood film 'Rab Ne Bana Di Joditransl' ('A Match Made By God'), also known RNBDJ.

Among his credits during the 2010s, Chopra is known for directing the 2018 Indian romance/drama comedy film 'Befikre(transl. 'Carefree')

However, Chopra is best known for conceiving the story, writing and directing the 1995 Indian romance/musical film 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' ('The Big-Hearted Will Take the Bride'), also known by the initialism DDLJ.

With a runtime of three and a half hours, the film tells of Raj Malhotra (Shah Rukh Khan) and Simran Singh (Kajol). Both are non-resident Indians who meet on a trip to Europe with their friends.

However, after some initial misadventures, they fall in love. Eventually, the battle begins to win over two traditional families.

On a budget of 40 million ($528,855), the film earned ₹1.06 billion (valued at about $32,766,000 in 1995) in India. Overseas, it received ₹160 million (valued at about US$4,946,000 in 1995).

'DDLJ' became the highest grossing Bollywood film of the year, and one of the most successful Indian films in history.

It won ten Filmfare Awards—the most for a single film at that time—and the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. Also, its soundtrack album became one of the most popular of the 1990s.

Many critics praised the film, which connected with different segments of society by simultaneously promoting strong family values and the following of one's own heart.

Its success led other film makers to target the non-resident Indian audience, which was deemed more lucrative for them. It spawned many imitations of its story and style, and homages to specific scenes.

The film' had been produced by Aditya's father, Indian director and film producer Yash Chopra ('Deewaar' lit. 'The Wall').

'DDLJ' was placed twelfth on the British Film Institute's list of top Indian films of all time. It is the longest-running film in the history of Indian cinema

As of 2019, over two decades after its first release, 'DDLJ' is still being shown at the Maratha Mandir theatre in Mumbai.

Widely regarded as one of the most influential and powerful executives in Indian entertainment, Chopra has however rejected the publicity and fame that came with being the son of Yash and also the Chief Executive of Yash Raj Films

Chopra has remained extremely media-shy and a passive individual, battling constant reports of an alleged dysthymic disorder throughout his three-decade career, resulting in very few public photos of him being in existence

Chopra has been active from 1988–present.
