Happy 61st Birthday, Lone Scherfig! Born today in 1959, this Danish screenwriter and film director has been involved with the Dogme 95 film movement.
This had been along with Danish film director and screenwriter Lars von Trier ('Riget', 'Breaking the Waves', 'Idioterne', 'Dancer in the Dark') and Danish film director Thomas Vinterberg ('Festen').
Among her credits, Scherfig is best known for directing the 2009 British/American coming-of-age romance/drama film 'An Education'. The film was based off of English journalist Lynn Barber's 2009 eponymous biographical autobiography book.
Set in 1961 London, Jenny Mellor (Carey Mulligan), despite her sheltered upbringing, is a teen with a bright future; she's smart, pretty, and has aspirations of attending Oxford University.
However, when David Goldman (Peter Sarsgaard), a charming but much older suitor, motors into her life in a shiny Bristol 405, Jenny gets a taste of adult life that she won't soon forget.
The following year, 'An Education' received a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Carey Mulligan). This occurred at the 63rd British Academy Film Awards in late February 2010.
Scherfig's films are generally romantic comedies, including her 2011 British-American romance/drama tragedy film 'One Day'.
The film had been based off of English novelist and screenwriter David Nicholls' eponymous 2009 romance fiction novel. He also wrote the screenplay for the film.

Through both experimenting with creative constraints and her astute attention to detail, Scherfig has come to be recognized as a significant talent in the film industry.
Scherfig has been active from 1985–present.
