May 1 - Wes Anderson


Happy 51st Birthday, Wes Anderson! Born today in 1969 as Wesley Wales Anderson, this American screenwriter, film producer and film director's features are known for their distinctive visual and narrative styles. 
  
During the late 1990s, Anderson directed his first feature film, being the 1996 American crime-comedy/heist film 'Bottle Rocket'. The film had been based off of his eponymous thirteen-minute 1994 American black and white short comedy/crime film. 
  
Two years after his first feature, Anderson co-wrote (along with Owen Wilson) and directed first film of which he's is best known. This was the 1998 American coming-of-age comedy-drama/ youth novel film 'Rushmore'. 
  
Among his credits during the 2000s, Anderson is known for directing the 2001 American comedy-drama/drama film 'The Royal Tenenbaums' and the 2004 American comedy-drama/adventure film 'The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou'.  
  
In the late 2000s, Anderson is known for directing the 2007 American comedy-drama/raod film 'The Darjeeling Limited' and the 2008 American stop motion animated comedy family film 'Fantastic Mr. Fox'. 
  
In the mid-2010s, Anderson is best known for directing the 2012 American coming-of-age romance/comedy-drama film 'Moonrise Kingdom' and the 2014 American black comedy/drama film 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' 
  
Three of his films — 'The Royal Tenenbaums', 'Moonrise Kingdom' and 'The Grand Budapest Hotel'—all appeared in BBC's 2016 poll of the greatest films since 2000. 
  
Of these, Anderson is best known for directing 'Rushmore', 'The Royal Tenenbaums' and 'The Grand Budapest Hotel'.  
  
In 2016, 'Rushmore' was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". 
  
Anderson currently runs the production company American Empirical Pictures, which he founded in 1998. 

In the late 2010s, Anderson won the Silver Bear for Best Director for the 2018 German/American stop-motion-animated science-fiction comedy drama film 'Isle of Dogs'. 
  
His latest film' the 2020 American comedy-drama/drama film 'The French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun' (known simply as 'The French Dispatch') will be released on July 24. 
  
Among Anderson's regulars include Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Jason Schwartzman, Anjelica Huston, Luke Wilson, Willem Dafoe and Edward Norton. 
  
Anderson is regarded by some critics as a modern-day example of the auteur. 
  
Anderson has been active from 1992–present.
