Happy 63rd Birthday, Aki Kaurismäki! Born today in 1957 as Aki Olavi Kaurismäki, this Finnish author, editor, screenwriter, producer and film director is described as Finland's best-known filmmaker.
Starting out, Kaurismäki did a wide variety of jobs. These included being a postman, dish-washer and film critic before forming a production and distribution company, Villealfa, with his older brother, Finnish film director Mika Kaurismäki.
This undertaking was in homage to French-Swiss film director, screenwriter and film critic Jean-Luc Godard's 1965 French New Wave black and white science fiction neo-noir film 'Alphaville'

Kaurismäki had been influenced by directors such as French screenwriter and film director Jean-Pierre Melville and French screenwriter and director Robert Bresson. However, Kaurismäki had been turned down from film school.
Among his credits, Kaurismäki is best known for writing, producing and directing the 1988 Finnish drama/crime film 'Ariel'. The film follows out-of-work Laplander Taisto Kasurinen (Turo Pajala).
During his time off, he seeks his dark destiny in a white Cadillac convertible in this drolly existential feature delivered with deadpan humor. Kaurismäki has called 'Ariel' his best movie.
This is the second installment of Kaurismäki's Proletariat Trilogy (‘Shadows in Paradise’ and ‘The Match Factory Girl’).

Kaurismäki is also best known for writing, producing and directing the 2011 Finnish/French/German drama/comedy film 'Le Havre'.
In this warmhearted portrait of the French harbor city that gives the film its name, it tells of a middle-aged man named Marcel Marx (André Wilms).
He scrapes together a living by shining shoes and living frugally with his wife Arletty (Kati Outinen) in their small flat, socializing in a low-key manner with his neighbors.
