Happy National 4/20 Day! Today, there is something in the air. Maybe you've noticed. This is because many marijuana users protest in civil disobedience by gathering in public to light up at 4:20 p.m.
April 20 has become an international counterculture holiday, where people gather to celebrate and consume cannabis. Many such events have a political nature to them, advocating the liberalization/ legalization of cannabis.
In 1971, five high school students in San Rafael, California used the term "4:20" in connection with a plan to search for an abandoned cannabis crop, based on a treasure map made by the grower.

The Waldos referred to this plan with the phrase "4:20 Louis". After several failed attempts to find the crop, the group eventually shortened their phrase to simply "4:20", which ultimately evolved into a code-word the teens used to refer to consuming cannabis.
Some note 4/20 is also Adolf Hitler’s birthday. And some go as far as to cite Bob Dylan’s song “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35” because twelve multiplied by thirty-five equals 420.
But, to put it "bluntly", those rumors of the history behind how April 20, and 4/20, got associated with marijuana are false.
American peace, social justice activist, cannabis rights activist, and musician Vivian McPeak, a founder of Seattle's Hempfest states that 4/20 is "half celebration and half call to action". American actor Paul Birch calls it a global movement and suggests that one cannot stop events like these.
A great deal of four hundred and twenty events have occurred in the United States, Canada, and Australia, and less frequent events have occurred in London, England, United Kingdom and Dunedin, New Zealand.
In 2013, the first country that legalized marijuana completely was Uruguay whereas Canada followed suit last year.
At the moment, the United States is still pondering complete legalization, despite the obvious benefits. For example, the employment rates have escalated due to the marijuana industry.
In 2017, new cannabis jobs were given to 121,000 people and the demand for retailers and experts is constantly rising.
The recreational weed states are the following: Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont, Washington, and Washington, D.C.
New York and New Jersey are usually mentioned as the great candidates when discussing the legalization. Illinois has just joined the crowd. However, the the law has been active as of January 2020.
As marijuana continues to be decriminalized and legalized around the world, American cannabis activist and founder of California's Harborside Health Center, Steve DeAngelo, has noted:
"...even if our activist work were complete, 420 morphs from a statement of conscience to a celebration of acceptance, a celebration of victory, a celebration of our amazing connection with this plant" and that he thinks that "it will always be worthy of celebration".

American former reporter for High Times magazine and an authority on cannabis culture Steve Bloom has credited the people who wrote the flyer for the date’s reputation as an annual gathering of pot smokers, hemp users and yesca consumers:
“They wanted people all over the world to get together on one day each year and collectively smoke pot at the same time,” he wrote in 2015. “They birthed the idea of a stoner holiday, which April 20 has become.”
