April 10 - National Siblings Day

Happy National Siblings Day (SD)! Also referred to as Sibling Day on April 10th each year, this day honors any and all of our brothers and sisters.

Siblings. They are sometimes our best friends or our worst enemies. At times, siblings will provide us with our biggest competition, strongest encouragement and remind us of our most embarrassing moments.

Fictional characters describe those siblings best who are both rivals and yet are best friends.

In American television writer and author Suzanne Collins' 2008 dystopian young adult science fiction novel The Hunger Games, 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen puts her life on the line to save her sister Prim.

Bo (John Schneider) and Luke (Tom Wopat) Duke from the CBS American action-comedy television series The Dukes of Hazzard (1979–1985) both risked their lives for each other. Although they were cousins, they acted more like brothers on the show.

American writer of children's and young adult fiction Beverly Cleary’s Beezus and Ramona’s longtime love-hate relationship between siblings depicted a normal childhood filled with angst.

Real-life royal siblings Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret had a different set of rules to follow making their relationship quite different from anything we would call normal. Being a queen will do that.

Queen Elizabeth’s grandsons, Princes William and Harry and William’s children have royal sibling relationships that engage the world as well.

Playing fictional characters who are siblings and being siblings in front of a television audience must have created a different lifestyle for Mary Kate and Ashley Olson. Their older sister is American actress Elizabeth.

Another pair of sibling actors is American film, television, and theater actress, singer, dancer, activist, and author Shirley MacLaine and American actor and filmmaker Warren Beatty ('Reds').

There have been plenty of presidents with siblings as well. 42nd U.S. President Bill Clinton has three siblings while 43rd U.S. President George W. Bush has five. 44th U.S. President Barak Obama has eight.

HISTORY

In 1995, native New Yorker Claudia Evart founded National Siblings Day. Also serving as director, she created this day to honor and celebrate siblings.

After losing her two siblings early in life in separate accidents, she knew how important siblings could be in our lives.

Evart created the a nonprofit organization Siblings Day Foundation (SDF), whose goals included the establishment of the national holiday.

She had selected April 10 in honor of her late sister, Lisette’s birthday.

Evart's tireless efforts have paved the way for forty-nine governors to recognize National Siblings Day and the last three presidents – Clinton, Bush and Obama – have also recognized the day by issuing a Presidential Message during their term in office.
