March 31 - Alejandro Amenábar

Happy 48th Birthday, Alejandro Amenábar! Born today in 1972 as Alejandro Fernando Amenábar Camtos, this Chilean-Spanish composer, screen play writer and film director, among other honors, has won nine Goyas and two European Film Awards and one Academy Award.

He has also written the screenplays to all six of his films and composed almost all of their soundtracks.

Among his credits, Amenábar is best known for co-composing, co-writing and directing the 1997 Spanich sci-fi/mystery film 'Abre Los Ojos' ('Open Your Eyes').

The film follows handsome twenty-five-year-old playboy César (Eduardo Noriega).

He had it all -- a successful career, expensive cars, a swank bachelor's pad, and an endless string of beautiful and willing women.

However, he is later thrown into a strange psychological mystery after a car accident scars his face and lands him in prison.

'Open Your Eyes' was also the film debut of Spanish actress and model Penélope Cruz. She played Sofia, César's best friend's Pelayo's (Fele Martinez) date.

Four years later, Cruz reprised her role as Sofia in American director, producer, screenwriter, journalist, author, and actor Cameron Crowe's ('Say Anything...') 2001 American science fiction psychological thriller film 'Vanilla Sky'.

Starring Tom Cruise, the film is an English-language adaptation of Amenábar's film.

In 2002, 'Open Your Eyes' was ranked at number 84 in the Top 100 Sci-Fi List by the Online Film Critics Society.

Amenábar has been active from 1992—present.
