Happy Birthday, Herbert Ponting! Born today in 1870 as Herbert George Ponting, this English professional photographer is best known as the expedition photographer and cinematographer for Royal Navy officer and explorer Robert Falcon Scott's Terra Nova Expedition to the Ross Sea and South Pole.
In this role, Ponting captured some of the most enduring images of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. This is in regard to his best known film: the 1924 silent black and white (tinted) English documentary film 'The Great White Silence'.
The film contains brief cinematograph sequences taken during the Terra Nova Expedition of 1910–1913. The principal cinematography was by Ponting himself, of whom was also responsible for producing and directing.
Originally a silent film, the documentary was restored and re-released in 2011 by the British Film Institute with a musical soundtrack by English musician, songwriter, composer, producer and actor Simon Fisher Turner.
Ponting had been active from 1914–1935.
