March 14 - Glauber Rocha

Happy Birthday, Glauber Rocha! Born today in 1939 as Glauber de Andrade Rocha (better known as Glauber Rocha), this Brazilian actor, screenwriter and film director was a leading exponent of Cinema Novo ("new cinema") and one of the most influential moviemakers of Brazilian cinema.

Among his credits, Rocha is best known for co-editing, writing and directing the 1964 Brazilian black and white drama/crime film 'Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol' (literally, 'God and the Devil in the Land of the Sun'). The film is also known as 'Black God, White Devil'.

Rocha is also best known for writing, co-producing, directing and co-starring (as Sara) in his 1967 Brazilian black and white drama film 'Terra em Transe' ('World in a Trance', also called 'Land in Anguish' or 'Earth Entranced'). The film is an allegory for the history of Brazil in the period 1960–66.

Years later, Rocha passed from a lung infection. This occurred in a hospital in Rio de Janeiro, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on August 22, 1981. He was 42.

Rocha had been active from 1959–1981.
