March 4 - Scott Hicks

Happy 67th Birthday, Scott Hicks! Born today in 1953 as Robert Scott Hicks, this Australian screenwriter and film director is best known as for writing and directing the 1996 Australian biographical drama/romance film 'Shine'

This biopic tells the story of Australian concert pianist David Helfgott. As a boy, he was a piano prodigy.

Years later, Helfgott's (Geoffrey Rush) musical ambitions generate friction with his overbearing father, Peter (Armin Mueller-Stahl). When Helfgott travels to London on a musical scholarship, his career as a pianist blossoms

Because of this, the pressures of his newfound fame, coupled with the echoes of his tumultuous childhood, conspire to bring Helfgott's latent schizophrenia boiling to the surface, and he spends years in and out of various mental institutions.

The following year, 'Shine' had been nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture at the 69th Academy Awards in late March 1997. However, the Oscar went to Rush for Best Actor in a Leading Role. The film also won an Emmy Award.

Hicks has been active from 1974–present.
